February 22, 2026 | Softball
Tallying the most runs iin 37 years with the help of a record-tying 21 hits, the Boston University softball team improves to 5-9, as the Thundering Herd (9-8) saw their four-game win streak snapped.
Eight Terriers earned multiple hits with senior Brooke Deppiesse, sophomore Camryn Lyons and junior Kyomi Apalit all collecting three. Finishing with five RBIs apiece, senior Megan Coyle launched the go-ahead grand slam in the fourth, and Deppiesse delivered a bases-clearing walk-off triple for the victory.
In the circle, senior Haley Ganino (1-1) earned her second career win by holding the Herd to just two hits over the final 3.2 innings as the Terriers' third pitcher. Marshall went deeper into its pen with five total pitchers allowing at least two runs apiece for the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After starting off the game with a lead-off homer, Marshall tallied a combined eight runs in the second off six hits, including a three-run homer against senior Kasey Ricard and two-out, two-run dinger against sophomore Danika Nell.
- Sophomore Camryn Lyons started off the rally in the bottom half by singling to left, reaching third on senior Aimee Metz's double and scoring on Apalit's RBI single.
- After Metz scored on a passed ball, Apalit took advantage of a fielding error during freshman Madolyn Coupal's single to cut the deficit to 9-3 entering the third.
- Marshall scored its 10th run with the help of two singles and a rundown situation, but BU came right back with five runs off three hits and four walks.
- Ganino earned a quick 1-2-3 in the top of the fourth, and the Terriers grabbed their first lead during the bottom half with seven runs off six hits.
- After junior Livia Christopher (single) and Deppiesse (walk) both plated a run, Coyle crushed a 1-1 pitch to left center for the Terriers' second two-out go-ahead grand slam of the tournament.
- Junior Kylie Doherty then immediately added a solo homer, and freshman Irys Kline followed sophomore Chloe Dryden's two-out double with an RBI single in the fifth for a 16-10 lead.
- The Herd tried to mount their own rally in the top of the sixth by earning a lead-off hit-by-pitch, two-run homer and single, but Ganino ended the threat with a ground out and pair of fly outs.
- BU then put the game away in the bottom half with four runs off three hits and an error, as Dryden put the ball in play for an RBI grounder and Deppiesse delivered a bases-clearing triple.
- The Terriers' 20 runs marked the second most in program history after the 1989 squad claimed a 25-1 victory over UMass Boston as part of a doubleheader sweep.
- BU previously totaled 21 hits against Bucknell during a 14-7 15-inning victory last season.
- The Terriers won while allowing double-digit runs for the third time in program history following an 11-10 win against Dartmouth in 2007 and 14-10 victory over Hartford in 1990.
- Deppiesse moved into a tie-for-sixth in the program record book at 16 career triples alongside Lauren Keleher ('24).
- Deppiesse's career-high five RBIs topped her previous best of four totaled on three occasions, including twice last season against Yale and Winthrop.
- Making her first four plate appearances of the season, Dryden earned her first two career hits and RBIs while also reaching home plate four times.
- Apalit also scored a personal-best four runs with the help of a career-high three hits.
- Coyle tallied at least five RBIs for the third time in two years with BU after tallying seven at Holy Cross and five at Bucknell last season.
- Ganino earned a win in the circle for the first time since pitching 4.1 scoreless innings as part of an 8-0 (5) shutout victory against Yale in 2025.
- BU earned its first win against Marshall following Saturday's 6-1 loss and a 13-12 defeat back in 2010. Coincidentally all three games took place in Charlotte.
- BU will conclude its scheduled time outside New England by making the trek to the Duke Invitational in Durham, North Carolina, for four games against Power 4 opponents.
- The Terriers will first face Northwestern on both Feb. 27 and Feb. 28 at 10 a.m., which will be followed by contests against Ohio State (Feb. 28) and the host Blue Devils (March 1).
