BOSTON – The Boston University men's soccer team will open its 74th season with two road games against a pair of former America East rivals, starting at Albany on Thursday night. The opening kick is slated for 7 p.m.

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • Head coach Kevin Nylen is entering his second fall campaign and looking to carry momentum from last year after the Terriers finished with a 3-1-2 record and scored multiple goals in four of those contests.
  • BU returns eight of the 11 players who earned at least one point in 2021. Senior Quinn Matulis posted a team-high five goals, including game winners against Navy and Holy Cross.
  • Both sophomore Brian Hernandez (3g, 2a) and junior Eitan Rosen (3g, 1a) are the other two returning Terriers who found the back of the net multiple times. Senior Colin Innes (1g, 2a) joined Hernandez in recording two assists apiece.
  • Senior Gianluca Arlotti anchored the backline that earned four shutouts (Navy, Colgate, Bucknell, Merrimack) and was named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team last week.
  • Senior Francesco Montali is back at net after starting 13 contests last year and recording a 1.64 goals against average with a 0.714 save percentage. Junior Andrew Wike started two games, earning a 1.42 GAA and 0.800 save percentage.
  • The Terriers welcome eight newcomers this year, including 2021-22 Gatorade Georgia Boys Soccer Player of the Year Quin DeLaMater and two transfers, Neal Carlson (SMU) and Daniel Kim (La Salle).
  • BU went 0-6-3 in road games last year with a 0-0 draw against Merrimack. In two of the contests, the Terriers battled hard but ultimately came up just short with a 3-2 OT loss at St. John's and 2-1 defeat at Boston College. They last earned a road non-conference win in 2015 at UMass (2-1).
  • This season marks the first for the NCAA in which there will be no overtime for regular season contests that are tied at the end of regulation.
SCOUTING ALBANY
  • The Great Danes were selected to finish fourth in the America East preseason coaches' poll after posting a 10-7-1 record and 4-3-1 conference mark last fall.
  • Albany went 7-0-1 at home during the regular season with a 1-0 win over Patriot League member Lafayette and is currently riding an 11-game unbeaten streak (9-0-2) at home against non-conference opponents dating back to 2019.
  • Andrew Weiner is the top returner for Albany after posting eight points off three goals and two assists. Giuliano Lucca (2g, 1a) is the other returner with multiple goals.
  • Shafique Wilson is the lone returning keeper with experience from last season. He won all three appearances while earning a 0.95 goals against average and 0.824 save percentage.
SERIES HISTORY
  • BU is 11-3-2 all-time in the series dating back to 1999 and is 6-1-1 on the road. The Terriers were 8-2-2 in America East meetings between 2001-2012.
  • The Great Danes won the last meeting at home, 3-0, in 2017 despite the two teams finishing tied in shots, 10-10.
  • The Terriers last won in 2015 at home, 3-0, with Albany posting a 16-12 advantage in shots.
UP NEXT
  • BU will continue the season-opening road trip at No. 9 New Hampshire on Sunday with a 5 p.m. start time.
  • The America East preseason favorite Wildcats are riding a three-game win streak in the series after posting a 2-0 road win last year and a 1-0 home victory in 2019.
