Craig Earns Split at ITA All-American Championships
October 1, 2023 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Oklahoma – Making his first appearance at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) All-American Championships, Boston University sophomore Corey Craig recorded a split on Saturday. Both LaFortune Tennis Park and the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center served as hosts for the 256-player field.
The 2023 All-PL First Team member opened the competition in the morning with an impressive straight-sets victory over Oliver Johansson, a three-time All-Summit League honoree who led 2023 Summit League champion Drake to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a team-high 18 singles wins. Craig pulled out a tightly-contested tiebreaker and then finished with an extra break in the second to eliminate Johansson, 7-6(4), 6-4.
In the Round of 128 later that afternoon, Craig found himself in a hard-fought battle with Texas A&M's Brayden Michna, a five-star blue-chip recruit who ranked as high as No. 7 nationally this past spring according to TennisRecruiting.net. Michna dropped the first set but rallied back to force a third. The two men then went back-and-forth all the way to a third-set tiebreaker with Michna coming out ahead, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3).
While Craig is in Oklahoma, his teammates are at the Brown Invitational. They will next head to Yale's campus for the ITA Northeast Regionals on Thursday (Oct. 5) - Monday (Oct. 9).
