Men's Tennis Battles Northeast Opponents at ITA Regionals
October 8, 2023 | Men's Tennis
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Boston University men's tennis team continued the fall slate by sending three Terriers to the ITA Northeast Regionals hosted by Yale over the weekend.
Sophomore Corey Craig, junior Dion Loutas and junior Cole Knutsen all collected at least one singles victory in straight sets before facing elimination.
Knutsen led BU with a pair of wins, as both he Craig reached the Round of 32. Knutsen started off with a 6-3, 7-5 win in the Round of 128 against Merrimack's Sadhista Linga and then cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Fairfield's Kostas Kollias. His hunt for an ITA Super Regional berth came to an end though against Boston College's Mai Gao in a tightly-contested, 7-6, 7-5, decision.
Coming off last weekend's doubleheader split at the ITA All-American Championships in Oklahoma, Craig earned an opening-round bye and then dropped just one game in a dominating 6-0, 6-1 victory over Bryant Diego Trejo to reach the Round of 32. For the second consecutive weekend though, he fell to a former TennisRecruiting.net blue chipper with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Yale's Eric Li, who ranked as high as No. 7 nationally before joining the Bulldogs.
Loutas pulled out a 6-4, 6-4 win over Fordham's Dhillon Virdee Oakley to open the singles draw. In the Round of 64, he dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Brown's Noah Hernandez.
BU only had one duo compete in the doubles bracket. Teaming together, Craig and Knutsen battled Bryant to a tiebreaker, ultimately coming up just short, 8-7, to Pablo Davila and Diego Serra Sparrow.
The Terriers will next host the BU Invitational at the Salem Country Club on Friday, Oct. 13 - Sunday, Oct. 15.
