Terriers Drop Home Match To Crusaders, 1-0
October 11, 2023 | Women's Soccer
BOSTON – Despite a 16-6 advantage in total shots, the Boston University women's soccer program fell to Holy Cross 1-0 on Wednesday evening at Nickerson Field.
BU (6-5-3, 3-2-1 PL) rattled off the first six shots of the game. However, the lone Crusader shot in the first half found the back of the net, and served as the game-deciding goal to seal the Holy Cross (4-4-5, 2-1-3 PL) win.
Senior Abigail McNulty and junior Morgan Fagan led all student-athletes with three shots each, with five on target combined. Junior goalkeeper Celia Braun made one save.
Grace Soltesz tallied the game-winner, and finished with a team-best two shots. Julia Walsh collected eight saves between the posts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU's first two shots came in the opening 150 seconds, as sophomore Natalie Godoy's chance in the box was snared by Walsh, then the keeper redirected Fagan's try over the crossbar.
- McNulty collected a Fagan cross near the top-left corner of the 18-yard box for a chance in the 16th minute, but Walsh made a diving stop to her left to poke it away.
- The Terriers earned a free kick in the 30th minute. Sophomore Giulianna Gianino sent the attempt directly to Walsh.
- Soltesz broke the ice in the 36th minute when her 20-yard free kick curled left, deflecting off a Terrier defender and into the lower-left corner.
- Freshman Ava Maguire nearly equalized with 34 seconds until halftime after securing sophomore Morgan Weaver's pass in front of the left post, but her shot rolled wide right.
- In the 64th minute, McNulty nearly leveled the score as her run down the left sideline created a shot that hit a Crusader defender and towards an open net, but an unfortunate bounce along the goal line allowed another marker to catch up to the ball to turn it aside.
- Braun's lone stop came on a full-extension leap to her right in the 74th minute, denying Samantha Adams from 15 yards out.
- Fagan sought the goal when she poked a shot near the left post, but Walsh was there for the denial.
- In addition to the 16-6 edge in shots, the Terriers were up 9-2 in shots on goal.
- BU collected nine shots in the first half.
- The Terriers also sported a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
- Holy Cross sustained three yellow cards to BU's one.
- Braun, Gianino, and junior Eileen Solomon played the full 90 minutes.
- BU's unbeaten streak concludes at four games.
- Wednesday was the Terriers' first loss at home since Sept. 16.
- BU has outshot its last three foes 53-31, and averaged nine shots on goal in that span.
- Outside of Braun, who has played every minute in goal this year, Solomon has played an entire match more than any other Terrier with 11 games. Gianino is behind her with nine.
- The all-time series between BU and Holy Cross now stands at 12-3 in the Terriers' favor.
- BU heads to reigning Patriot League champion Bucknell on Saturday (Oct. 14). Opening kick is scheduled for 1 p.m.
