AMESBURY, Mass. - Senior
Sam Stevens and freshman
Lane Hutson of the Boston University men's ice hockey team each earned a Hockey East weekly award, the league announced on Monday.
Stevens was named Player of the Week while Hutson was heralded as Rookie of the Week. Both skaters were outstanding in the Terriers' weekend sweep of Providence.
A native of Montreal, Quebec, Stevens earned his first Hockey East weekly award thanks to a four-point weekend against the Friars. He tallied two assists, including a helper on the game-winner, in a 6-4 victory that clinched the Hockey East regular-season title for the Terriers. Stevens then assisted on the opening goal and scored an insurance goal in a 2-0 victory on Saturday in Providence. No other league skater tallied more points across the final weekend of the regular season than Stevens. For the season, Stevens has matched his career high with three goals and has recorded a career-best seven assists for a career-best 10 points.
Hutson earned his sixth Rookie of the Week honor and his seventh overall weekly award from Hockey East after he scored two goals on Friday and assisted on both goals in Saturday's win. His four-point weekend capped an incredible regular season for Hutson, who has established himself as one of the top defensemen in the nation, regardless of class. Hutson is the first Hockey East defender in 39 years to lead the league in scoring (in conference games), totaling 34 points in 24 league contests. Overall, Hutson was the only Hockey East player to reach 30 assists, collecting 31 in addition to 12 goals for 43 points, which is tied with senior
Matt Brown for the league lead. Both Brown and Hutson rank seventh among NCAA skaters with 1.30 points per game.
BU will host a Hockey East quarterfinal contest at Agganis Arena on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The Terriers will play the lowest remaining seed following Wednesday's Opening Round games.
