Terrier Twelve - #7: Track & Field and Cross Country Raise the Standard, Break School Records

July 13, 2023

Returning for a 15th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday this summer as we count down this year's Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com.

Coming in at number seven in this year's Terrier 12 is track & field and cross country, highlighted by the best indoor track team finishes since 2016 and sophomore Daisy Liljegren's appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

During the cross country season, both the men's and women's teams placed third at the Patriot League Championships. Liljegren and junior Matt Mason made the First Team All-Patriot League while grad student Meghan Convery, freshman Vera Sjöberg, senior Foster Malleck and freshman Freddy Collins all made the Second Team All-Patriot League. Collins was also named the Rookie of the Year after being the first freshman to cross the finish line at the league meet. Both squads also posted top-15 finishes at the NCAA Northeast Regional meet.

Both men's and women's track & field placed second at the Indoor Patriot League Championships for the men's best finish since 2016 and the women's best finish since 2017. Freshman Logan Popelka was named the Indoor Rookie of the Meet after taking second in the 200m and winning gold in the 400m with a meet and facility record.

Multiple indoor school records were broken with grad student Emma Montoya setting the 400m record on the same day senior Noelani Phillips set the 200m record. Phillips rewrote two additional records with the indoor 300m and the outdoor 200m at the start of both seasons. On the field, sophomore Steven Franco set the heptathlon record at the Indoor PL Championships and junior Stuart Bladon broke the decathlon record during the regular outdoor season.

At the PL Outdoor Championships, the women's squad followed up their indoor performance with another second-place finish at the league meet while the men took third. Liljegren was named the Track Athlete of the Meet while Sjöberg was named the Rookie of the Meet.

BU totaled a combined 16 gold medals at the PL meets this year with multiple Terriers either sweeping indoor and outdoor event titles and/or successfully defending their titles from the previous season. Outside of gold medal finishes, BU saw 17 Second Team All-Patriot League placements.

Six Terriers qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Regional in grad student Kasim Cisse, Malleck, Phillips, Popelka, Liljegren and Sjöberg. Liljegren advanced to her second appearance in the 10,000m at the national championship and placed 16th to earn the second All-American accolade of her career.
