BOSTON – The Boston University women's soccer program begins its 2023 campaign on Thursday (Aug. 17) when it hosts Vermont at Nickerson Field. Opening kick is set for 6 p.m.
Admission is free for fans, and 2023 team schedule posters are available at the marketing table on the Nickerson Field concourse, while supplies last.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU will compete in its 29th season as a varsity program in 2023. Through 28 seasons, the Terriers are 337-177-55, winning over 64 percent of its matches.
- Head Coach Casey Brown (COM'10) is set for her second season at the helm.
- In 2022, the Terriers finished tied for second in the Patriot League with 18 points on a 6-3 conference record, earning the third seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
- BU advanced to the semifinal round after defeating No. 6 Loyola Maryland in the quarterfinals. The Terriers and second-ranked Bucknell took a scoreless game to penalty kicks, where the eventual league-champion Bison advanced, 4-3.
- Overall, BU went 11-8-1 on the year, its 25th season with 11 or more victories. Included in those wins was its first triumph over a top-25 opponent since 2014, a 1-0 road decision at No. 25 Harvard.
- This year, the Terriers were projected to finish third in the Patriot League poll, sharing the league lead with Bucknell for the highest amount of first-place votes.
- Senior Abigail McNulty, junior Morgan Fagan, and sophomore Giulianna Gianino were named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team. The trio accounted for 36 of BU's 73 total points a season ago.
- Overall, 20 letterwinners from 2022 return to the fold. Ten of those Terriers made at least one start last year, and nine played over 800 minutes.
- Seven newcomers arrive to Terrier Town this year.
- BU's captains are McNulty, fellow seniors Grace Ferrara and Lily Matthews, and redshirt senior Kayla Ross.
- Ross and goalkeeper Gretchen Bennett are in their fifth seasons with the Terriers.
- BU will play 18 regular season matches in 2023, 11 of which take place at Nickerson Field. The Terriers will square off against programs from seven different conferences.
SCOUTING VERMONT
- Vermont was projected to finish seventh in the America East Preseason Coaches' Poll, earning 21 points.
- Last year, the Catamounts went 4-9-3 on the season, and 0-5-3 against America East foes.
- Vermont's top three scorers from 2022 return this season, with Kate Bossert's six goals and 14 points leading all Catamounts.
- Sydney Remington and Jill Brody each potted three goals a year ago for 10 and seven points, respectively.
- Head Coach Kristi Huizenga prepares for her 13th season in Burlington, Vt. She is 0-2 against BU during her tenure.
SERIES HISTORY
- Thursday marks the 18th all-time meeting between BU and Vermont in a series that began in 1996.
- The two teams were America East rivals from 1996 to 2012, with all 18 matches occurring in that span.
- The Terriers sport a 13-2-2 advantage in the matchup, and carry an eight-game unbeaten streak into Thursday.
- During that stretch, BU has outscored Vermont 26-1. In total, the Terriers average 2.71 goals per game against the Catamounts.
