NEWTON, Mass. – Facing two one-goal deficits, the Boston University men's soccer team rallied back to earn a 2-2 draw at Boston College Tuesday night.
With their first draw of the season, the Terriers move to 4-2-1, while the Eagles now sit at 2-2-3.
BC struck first by converting on a penalty kick and then responded to graduate student
Quinn Matulis' third successful free kick with a hard shot attempt that deflected off a Terrier into the back of the net during the 44th minute. Senior
Andrew Rent tied the game by pouncing on an ill-advised back pass and getting around a defender to score his first goal of the year at 52:29.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rent quickly put BC on notice, forcing a diving save from Leon Musial just 23 seconds into the contest.
- After the Eagles prevented the Terriers from attempting a shot on back-to-back corners, Marco Dos Santos made senior Francesco Montali make a diving save of his own to keep the game scoreless at 2:29.
- The teams went back-and-forth with BC drawing a foul in the box while trying to attempt a shot on a dangerous cross.
- Aidan Farwell fired a shot at the left side of the net, as Montali jumped the other way on the penalty kick attempt at 21:32.
- BU earned a free kick from 25 yards out at 26:10, and Matulis made the Eagles pay by curling the free kick inside the near post off the diving keeper's hands to tie the game, 1-1.
- The Eagles retook the lead in the 44th minute when Augustine Boadi blasted an 18-yard shot that deflected off a BU defender over the outstretched arms of Montali.
- BU didn't need a lot of time in the second half to tie the game a second time, as a BC defender tried to head back a long kick from Montali to his keeper.
- Musial though ran toward the top of the box trying to clear the ball and watched helplessly as the back pass went past him, allowing Rent to gain possession and score on the empty net.
- Graduate student Colin Inness rifled a shot right at Musial in the 67th minute, and freshman Luke Dunne forced an impressive leaping save from Musial at 85:01 on a dangerous header.
- The Eagles earned a corner with 45 seconds remaining and managed a frantic shot before time expired, but Montali was in position for the save.
GAME NOTES
- Matulis has scored three goals through seven contests after tallying four goals in 16 appearances last season. He now owns a team-high six points.
- Rent became the sixth Terrier to score a goal this season and the third alongside seniors Aidan Holmes and Eitan Rosen to earn at least one goal and assist.
- Montali earned two saves, while Musial recorded three saves.
- The teams finished in an 8-8 shot attempt deadlock with the Eagles posting a 7-4 advantage in corners.
- BC moved to 29-18-11 all-time in the series and extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games (7-0-3) following last year's 0-0 draw at BU.
