Late Heroics Lift BU Over Colgate, 2-0

BOSTON – Two goals in the game's final 3:41 propelled the Boston University women's soccer program to a 2-0 victory over Colgate on Wednesday (Sept. 20) at Nickerson Field.

BU (4-4-2, 1-1-0 PL) and Colgate (1-7-2, 0-1-1 PL) played to a scoreless draw for the first 85 minutes. However, sophomore Mackenzie Stickelman found the back of the net in the 86th minute, with junior Morgan Fagan following just 2:26 later to seal the win.

Junior Eileen Solomon and sophomore Giulianna Gianino tallied the assists on BU's goals. Junior Celia Braun posted four saves for her third shutout of the year.

Ari Bezanson led the Raiders with four shots, one of which was on target. Alli Popham registered two saves between the posts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Colgate came out firing with a blocked shot 60 seconds in that led to two Colgate corner kicks. Braun then collected Ana Schremp's attempt in the fourth minute.
  • Sophomore Natalie Godoy narrowly chipped a shot wide left of the post a minute later, followed by Fagan's 1-yard try that Popham snagged.
  • In the 16th minute, Braun leaped to send Bezanson's 20-yard blast over the crossbar. Lyna Schaffer's header off the ensuing corner kick floated wide left.
  • Senior Michelle Williams ripped possession away from Colgate in its own zone, leading to Gianino's chance atop the box to zip over the bar.
  • Four minutes out of halftime, Sara Anelli placed a ball on net for Braun to stop. That would serve as the last shot between either side for the next 29:21, until freshman Ciara Kennedy's low-angle try in the 78th minute.
  • Less than 90 seconds afterward, Ally Giovino was open for Colgate near the left post, but her header sailed just wide.
  • BU broke the tie when Solomon sent a free kick near midfield into the box. Stickelman found the loose ball near the left post to finish in the bottom-left of the net.
  • Gianino crossed the ball from the right corner in the 89th minute, and the Raiders were unable to clear. Fagan gained possession six yards out to beat Popham with 1:19 on the clock.
STATS
  • Colgate finished with a 12-9 advantage on shots, though each team generated four shots on goal.
  • After both sides combined for 16 shots in the first half, there were five combined shots in the second stanza.
  • The Terriers blocked four Raider shots in the first 26 minutes.
  • Though Colgate boasted an 11-6 edge in corner kicks, BU was up 4-2 in that category during the second half.
  • Braun, Gianino, and Solomon played the full 90 minutes in the match.
NOTES
  • BU picked up its first Patriot League regular season home victory by multiple goals since Oct. 13, 2021.
  • Seven of BU's 10 goals in 2023 have come in the second half. Of those seven, four occurred in the game's final 10 minutes.
  • Stickelman joins classmates Gianino and Godoy with two goals on the campaign. Gianino now has a team-best three assists and seven points this year.
  • Fagan notches her first goal since Oct. 22, 2022 at Loyola Maryland.
  • Solomon's assist is her first as a Terrier, and first point since Oct. 30, 2022, which also came against the Greyhounds.
  • Braun now has 39 saves on the year, setting a new career-high.
  • BU finishes its four-game homestand with a 2-1-1 record, improving to 4-2-1 at Nickerson Field in 2023.
  • The Terriers snap their three-game losing streak to Colgate, moving to 10-4-1 in the all-time series.
UP NEXT
  • BU starts a two-game road swing at Lehigh on Sunday (Sept. 24). Opening kick is slated for 2 p.m.
