Giannaros Scores 1,000th Career Point in Loss at New Hampshire

DURHAM, N.H. — Senior Alex Giannaros scored her 1,000th point off a three-pointer in the fourth quarter, but the Boston University women's basketball team could not pull off a 18-point comeback win at New Hampshire on Saturday night in Lundholm Gymnasium, falling 69-60.

Giannaros entered the night at 999 career points and became the 27th Terrier to score 1,000 career points after she curled around a screen and shot over a defender to knock down her first triple of the game with 6:47 to play in the game.

The Terriers never led and were down by as many as 18 before storming back in the second half and tying the game at 41-41 with 1:43 left in the third quarter, but the Wildcats pulled away in the fourth, shooting 15-of-17 in the final frame to close out the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Wildcats started 6-of-6 from three in the first quarter, only knocking down shots from behind the arc and taking an 18-12 lead into the second.
  • The Terriers had six different scorers in the first quarter, with Inés Monteagudo knocking down the only triple for BU in that frame and leading the Terriers with three points.
  • UNH would not stop scoring from deep, finishing the first half 8-of-12 from beyond the arc and stretching their lead to a 36-19 gap.
  • Sophomore Aoibhe Gormley was the top scorer for BU in the first with five points.
  • BU opened the second half on a 16-2 run, with sophomore Sisi Bentley scoring six points in that span and Gormley adding five more.
  • Two Bella McLaughlin free throws tied the game at 41-41 with 1:33 to play in the period, but two Wildcats free throws put them back in front, 43-41, going into the fourth.
  • Both squads struggled to score from the floor in the fourth, with BU only making six shots compared to UNH's four, but the Wildcats' advantage came at the free throw line, where they made 15 free throws and stretched their lead out.
STATS
  • The Terriers shot 18-of-46 (39.1%) from the field compared to New Hampshire's 20-of-54 (37%) clip.
  • UNH went 8-for-12 (66.7%) from three in the first half while the Terriers were 3-of-9 (33.3%), but BU held UNH to just 24% (6-for-25) shooting in the second half.
  • The Terriers lost the rebounding battle 37-26, though they outrebounded UNH 18-14 in the second half.
  • Leading the scoring for the Terriers were Gormley (12 points) and Bentley (11 points).
  • Giannaros was held scoreless until the fourth quarter, when she scored her 1,000th, 1,001st and 1,002nd points with a three. She finished with eight points.
  • Eight terriers scored and five had seven or more points, with freshman Allison Schwertner notching seven.
  • Two Terriers fouled out, as Giannaros and sophomore Audrey Ericksen both finished with five fouls.
  • BU had a nice night in the paint, notching 22 paint points.
NOTES
  • The last player to record her 1,000th point was Caitlin Weimar, who scored her 1,000th on Dec. 9, 2023 at home against Harvard.
  • On top of the 1,000-point mark, Giannaros is now tied the sixth spot on the all-time three-pointers list at BU, with 172 triples.
  • Junior Anete Adler made her season debut., scoring nine points, grabbing three boards and adding an assist.
  • This was the first time in six contests the Terriers lost, but they still own the series lead, 45-34.
  • BU is now 0-2 on the road after falling at No. 2 UConn on Nov. 7.
