Men's Basketball Falters in Second Half at UMass Lowell, 83-71

LOWELL, Mass. – Led by a pair of 20+ point performances, UMass Lowell pulled away in the second half to defeat the Boston University men's basketball team, 83-71, on Saturday afternoon at the Costello Athletic Center.

With their fifth-straight victory, the River Hawks (10-4) extended their active home win streak to 14 games, as the Terriers dropped to 5-7 on the year. BU was tied at the half for the first time this season, 27-27, but UML shot over 70 percent in the second stanza with the help of five 3-pointers to pull away.

Graduate student Miles Brewster totaled a season-high 19 points, while both senior Malcolm Chimezie and sophomore Kyrone Alexander earned 12 points apiece. BU shot 62.1 percent in the second half but was unable to keep pace with the River Hawks.

Martin Somerville went 6-for-9 from behind the arc en route to a game-high 22 points, while Max Brooks claimed 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Both Yuri Covington (14) and Cam Morris III (10) finished in double figures as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the teams exchanged layups, Brewster hit one of his own to spark a 16-3 run capped by junior Ben Palacios' jumper for an 18-5 advantage with 10:47 left in the half.
  • The Terriers though cooled off over the next four minutes, as the River Hawks went on a 11-2 spurt with Somerville starting and ending the run with 3-pointers.
  • UML continued to chip away and eventually grabbed its first lead at 1:15 on Somerville's jumper, 25-24.
  • Sophomore Michael McNair responded with a 3-pointer, but Quinton Mincey hit a jumper to send the teams to the locker room tied at the half, 27-27.
  • Both teams opened the second half at an identical 6-for-7 from the field with Alexander draining a 3-pointer for a 40-39 lead at 16:09.
  • After Alexander tied the game on a free throw at 41-41 with 15:18 left, Covington scored from behind the arc to key a 17-4 run capped by Brooks' jumper at 10:54.
  • Brewster followed with a 3-pointer, but BU would never get any closer in the loss, as the the teams went back and forth the rest of the contest. 
GAME NOTES
  • Brewster came up two points shy of tying his career high set twice last against Patriot League opponents.
  • Chimezie scored in double digits in back-to-back games for the first time in his career.
  • Landrum earned his first start of the season, while sophomore Spencer Joyner made his first appearance after being sidelined by injury.
  • Improving to 5-0 against in-state opponents this year, UML became just the second opponent to shoot over 49 percent from the field against the Terriers.
  • The River Hawks outscored BU in bench points, 31-10, and in the paint, 42-38, with a 10-7 lead in 3-pointers.
  • UML won its third straight contest in the series to tie BU all-time, 6-6.

  • BU will conclude non-conference play by visiting Maine on Sunday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m.
  • The Terriers lead the all-time series, 61-42, dating back to 1903.
