Terriers Ride Second Half Offensive Surge to 3-2 Victory over Army

BOSTON – Boosted by sophomore Andrea Di Blasio's brace, the defending Patriot League champion Boston University men's soccer team opened the title defense with a 3-2 victory over Army West Point at Nickerson Field Saturday afternoon.

With their first multi-goal performance of the season, the Terriers improve to 1-1-4 (1-0-0 PL), while the Black Knights drop to 1-5-1 (0-1-0 PL) after surrendering a season high in goals scored. Army struck first in the third minute but would not find the back of the net again until 82:53 after BU scored all three of its goals earlier in the second half.

Di Blasio netted the equalizer and the third goal, while junior Diego Rived earned the second score. Freshman Dylan Williams, junior Damola Salami, junior Quin DeLaMater and senior Andrew Rent all had an assist after the Terriers had combined for three assists through the first five contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gage Lyons earned his first of two goals at 2:52 when he used his first touch off Jubril Bamgbala's cross to push the ball into the box and then ripped a 15-yard shot past graduate student Andrew Wike for the 1-0 advantage.
  • Senior Daniel Kim recorded BU's lone shot attempt of the first half during the 27th minute by pouncing on a loose ball with a hard shot that was just inches wide of the left post.
  • The Terriers later earned the game's first corner at 40:11, but the Black Knights got the clear to enter the locker room ahead, 1-0.
  • BU remained on the attack and had another corner cleared in the 50th minute.
  • Two minutes later, Williams made a strong run down the right side of the Army box and sent a low cross to set up Di Blasio's one-touch tap in past a defenseless keeper.
  • Wike made a diving save at 53:07 and helped the backline defend against consecutive Army corner kicks to keep the game tied.
  • Salami helped give BU the lead for good by moving around a defender and sending a service pass into the box for Rived to put his extended leg on for a quick shot past the keeper.
  • The Terriers added what proved to be the game winner at 77:22. DeLaMater played a long ball from BU's side of the field toward Army's endline, and after the first bounce, Rent sent a cross for Di Blasio's successful header.
  • Army cut the deficit to one goal at 82:53 when Lyons headed in Justin Davidyock's corner kick.
  • Wike kept the lead with a diving stop at 85:18, and the backline followed up by pressuring Army into a tough shot high over the crossbar on the ensuing corner kick.
GAME NOTES
  • BU earned its most goals in a conference opener since a 3-0 victory at Colgate during the 2021 spring campaign and the most goals in a conference home opener since a 3-0 win over America East foe Stony Brook in 2009.
  • Di Blasio and Rived both earned their first career goals with Di Blasio grabbing a team lead in points at four.
  • Rived and DeLaMater joined Kim and sophomore Jason Zacarias as the only Terriers to have earned a goal and assist this season.
  • BU finished with a 9-7 advantage in shots despite the Black Knights owning a 6-2 lead in corner kicks.
  • Wike had three saves, while Army's Blair Camargo came up empty handed.
  • The Terriers remained unbeaten at home against the Black Knights with a 6-0-3 record to improve to 10-4-4 all-time in the series.
UP NEXT
  • BU will have a quick turnaround and return to non-conference play with a visit to Brown on Tuesday (Sept. 17) at 7 p.m.
  • The Bears are 8-1-1 over the last 10 meetings following a 1-1 draw in Providence in 2019.
