Terriers Drop Home Contest to Raiders, 61-49

BOSTON – Sophomore Bella McLaughlin collected 12 points, but the Boston University women's basketball program could not fend off Colgate in a 61-49 loss on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
BU (7-8, 1-3 PL) led after the first and second quarters. However, the Raiders (12-5, 2-2 PL) outscored the Terriers 37-24 in the second half as the home side shot 5-for-21 from the field in the middle frames.
McLaughlin made four her seven shots. Classmate Inés Monteagudo Pardo scored 10 points on four baskets.
Taylor Golembiewski powered the Raiders with 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting, including five three-pointers. Morgan McMahon recorded 17 points with four triples as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Alex Giannaros opened the game with her 200th career three-pointer in the left corner on BU's opening possession.
- Golembiewski totaled nine points in the first quarter, including a jump shot in the paint to push the visitors ahead 15-9 with six minutes gone by.
- After Giannaros and Lara Cook traded layups, the Terriers closed the first quarter on an 8-0 with four different scorers. Sophomore Audrey Ericksen's jumper made it 19-17 after 10 minutes.
- Neither side made a shot from the field in the second until McLaughlin skated down the right lane for an underhanded layup with under 5:30 on the clock, pushing the BU lead to 23-17.
- The Terriers would not score in the final 4:40 of the frame, however, allowing Colgate to claw back within 25-24 at halftime.
- Sophomore Sisi Bentley opened the third quarter with a pair of free throws, but five straight Golembiewski points on a three and midrange jumper handed the Raiders a 29-27 lead.
- Freshman Allison Schwertner leveled the score at 29 with a layup at the 6:37 mark, but the Raiders rattled off a 9-0 run with five more Golembiewski points for a 38-29 lead.
- Colgate drilled a pair of threes from Golembiewski and McMahon for a 13-point lead, but Monteagudo answered with a left-wing triple at the 30-second mark to bring BU within 44-34 heading to the fourth quarter.
- Monteagudo knocked down another three, this time from the left corner on the first possession in the final stanza, while junior Anete Adler converted a hook shot to slice the deficit to 44-39 with 8:51 on the clock.
- The Raiders proceeded on a 12-0 run in under three minutes from there with seven of those points coming from McMahon, making it 56-39.
- BU got within single digits, 58-49, with 1:22 to play on a 10-2 run that Ericksen capped with a steal at halfcourt to set up Monteagudo's open layup. However, Colgate sank three foul shots to seal the result.
- The Terriers shot nearly 48 percent from the field, including 9-for-10 in the first quarter.
- Colgate made almost 38 percent of its shots, but took 16 more attempts than BU.
- BU boasted the advantage on the boards, 26-21. Giannaros led the way with five caroms.
- Adler, McLaughlin and Monteagudo accounted for all 30 of BU's bench points, marking the second time this year the Terrier bench has eclipsed 30 points.
- Point paints favored the Terriers, 30-20.
- The Raiders turned 16 BU turnovers into 15 points.
- Giannaros became the fifth Terrier in program history to reach 200 career three-pointers, joining Sarah Hope '17, Chantell Alford '13, Alex Young '12 and Kristi Dini '09.
- Before the game, Giannaros was presented with a commemorative 1,000-point ball to celebrate the milestone she reached back on Nov. 16 at New Hampshire.
- McLaughlin notched her first Patriot League game in double figures and her fifth overall this season.
- Monteagudo's 10 points are a season high and mark her third time as a Terrier scoring in double figures. She last did so on Feb. 14, 2024 vs. Army West Point.
- Saturday was the first instance all season that BU lost a game despite leading at halftime.
- The all-time series remains in the Terriers' favor at 20-11.
- BU heads to Lehigh for a midweek tilt on Wednesday (Jan. 15). Opening tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.
