BOSTON – Winner of 13 conference tournament titles dating back to 2000, the Boston University softball team had two members earn Non-Power 4 All-Quarter Century Team honors, as announced by D1Softball.
Three-time All-American April (Setterlund) Madiedo (Questrom'11) was one of 25 non-P4 hitters recognized for her accomplishments at the plate and the only P4 or non-P4 hitter based in the Northeast to earn the honor, while three-time NFCA Region Coach of the Year
Ashley Waters (2016-pres.) was one of 25 head coaches named to the list.
Setterlund helped the Terriers reach two NCAA tournaments, highlighted by the program's first regional final appearance in 13 years in 2009, and become the first America East team since 2000-01 to earn a NCAA win in back-to-back seasons. Recognized as the conference's top player in both 2010 and 2011 following a 2008 AE Rookie of the Year campaign, she graduated from BU holding six single-season records and as the all-time leader in batting average (.417), hits (264), doubles (60), RBIs (140) runs (170) and slugging percentage (.681) while ranking tied-for-second in home runs (31).
Excelling off the field as well, BU's first-ever First Team All-American member and second All-American overall was a model student who received the 2011 BU Athletics Woman of the Year nod alongside the University's prestigious Scarlet Key award. The Torrance, California, native also landed a spot on the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll (3.50+ GPA) two times. Just six years after graduation, she was inducted into the BU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017 as a first-ballot honoree.
Both a 2008 American East Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Waters had the opportunity to compete against Setterlund for two seasons before graduating from the University of Maine in 2009. The Black Bear Hall of Famer quickly transitioned to the coaching profession with Maine in fall 2009 and later spent three seasons as the top assistant at Harvard from 2013-15. The Amesbury, Massachusetts, native was named the seventh softball head coach in BU history by director of athletics
Drew Marrochello on July 7, 2015, and made an immediate impact, as the Terriers increased their win total by 11 victories and reached the NCAA tournament for the first of seven times under her watch.
Besides leading BU to a program-record 363 victories during the last 10 seasons (including the 2020 campaign cut short by CoVID-19) at the helm, she is a perfect 9-for-9 in leading the Terriers to the Patriot League championship round. Overall, BU has claimed seven tournament titles along with six regular season championships. Highlight non-conference wins include the Northeast region's first-ever victory against the nation's top-ranked team (No. 1 Oklahoma) in 2018, a victory over then-No. 12 Baylor in 2023 and a combined eight wins vs. Boston College.
The five-time Patriot League Coach of the Year and three-time NFCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year has helped the Terriers earn a combined nine PL Pitcher of the Year, eight PL Player of the Year, six PL Defensive Player of the Year and three PK Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards. Infielder
Kayla Roncin ('24) claimed the PL's first All-America award in 2023 when she was recognized as an NFCA Third Team honoree, and senior pitcher
Kasey Ricard collected D1Softball Second Team honors in 2024.
Ricard and Roncin along with their teammates went a combined 105-16 (.868) in 2023-24 under Waters to become the first squad in the Northeast to record 50+ wins in back-to-back seasons. This past year, even with the graduation of 10 Terriers in summer 2024, BU went 39-19 and three-peated as conference tournament champions.
