Terriers Fall to Crusaders in Worcester, 60-47

WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Allison Schwertner collected 10 points and eight rebounds, but the Boston University women's basketball program fell to Holy Cross, 60-47, on Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center Arena.

BU (8-14, 2-9 PL) was limited to under 39 percent shooting while trailing for over 35 minutes in the game. On the other end, the Crusaders (15-7, 8-3 PL) reclaimed the lead midway through the second quarter and did not look back.

Schwertner led nine different Terriers in scoring. Sophomore Inés Monteagudo Pardo drained three first-half three-pointers to finish with nine points.

Meg Cahalan dropped a career high 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting while making all five of Holy Cross' threes. Lindsay Berger added 12 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Holy Cross scored the game's first six points on shots within 12 feet, coaxing a Terrier timeout just 2:22 into the contest.
  • BU went on to drain three of their five first-quarter three-point shots. Monteagudo nailed a pair while sophomore Aoibhe Gormley hit one from the corner.
  • Classmate Bella McLaughlin scored BU's final four points of the first to pull the Terriers within 16-13.
  • The sophomore would put BU in front on an underhanded layup through the right lane, then junior Anete Adler found freshman Inez Gallegos alone on the left block for a basket that made it 21-18 Terriers with 5:17 to play in the second quarter.
  • Monteagudo's third triple of the game extended the lead to four at the 4:20 mark, but the Crusaders ended the quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 32-26 advantage into halftime.
  • Holy Cross expanded its lead to double digits, 38-28, when Cahalan knocked down two three-pointers in the first 1:15 of the third quarter.
  • The Terriers held the Crusaders scoreless over the next 4:25 thanks to a 7-0 run, capped with Adler's nostalgic three-point play with 4:33 on the clock.
  • Cahalan kept BU at bay with another three, and Hannah Griffin's buzzer-beating layup helped Holy Cross score the final four points of the stanza and create a 49-41 edge over the Terriers.
  • BU didn't score in the fourth quarter until the clock read 3:47 as Holy Cross built a 57-41 lead, stopped after Adler found a cutting Schwertner through the paint for a layup.
  • Cahalan countered with another three-pointer for the largest lead of the game, 60-43, with under two minutes left to help seal the result.
STATS
  • In addition to its .388 field goal percentage, BU was just 4-for-12 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc.
  • The Terrier defense limited the Crusaders to under 27 percent shooting from distance, with all Crusaders except for Cahalan combining for a 0-for-10 performance.
  • Holy Cross won the rebounding battle, 31-26. Each team snagged 10 offensive boards.
  • Gormley and Adler each finished with three assists. Gormley posted her fourth game this year with multiple assists and zero turnovers.
  • BU held the edge in paint points (26-20), second chance points (13-10) and bench points (26-8).
