Barnes, Varnerin, Pape Earn PL Weekly Awards
March 24, 2025 | Men's Lacrosse
Pape took home two those honors, as he was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week. Barnes was named PL Goalkeeper of the Week for the third consecutive Monday and sophomore Donald Varnerin claimed PL Defensive Player of the Week accolades. All three were instrumental in the Terriers' 10-9 win at No. 2/3 Army West Point on Saturday.
In just his third start of the season at midfield, Pape scored a career-best four goals and did not have a single turnover. He helped BU go up 1-0, then scored his second of the day to cut a second-quarter deficit to just one at 3-2. Pape then opened the third quarter with a tying goal before giving BU an 8-7 lead in the fourth quarter. He also had a terrific hockey assist on the OT winner, drawing a double team before dishing it to Tyler Fox, who then found an open Jimmy Kohr for the clinching goal. Pape's previous career best was two goals and he now has eight goals on the season. He is the first student-athlete to garner both awards in the same week since Loyola Maryland's Matthew Minicus on March 20, 2023.
Barnes turned in one of the performances of the season on Saturday. He made a career-best 22 saves, including a stop in overtime that led to the Terriers' game-winning possession. Barnes had 11 saves at halftime and made 10 more saves in the second half as he continued to keep the Terriers within striking distance. He only allowed three goals in settled 6-on-6 situations, and one of those goals came after a scrum in front of his crease that should have been disallowed. Barnes was also fantastic in the ride and clear, securing one caused turnover and two ground balls while helping BU go 28-for-32 on clears and forcing Army into five failed clears. He enters the week ranked fourth in the nation in save percentage (.625) and seventh in the NCAA in goals-against average (7.89).
BU will travel to No. 12 Harvard on Tuesday for the newly named Charles River Rivalry Game. Opening faceoff at Jordan Field is set for 7 p.m.
