Hutson Added to United States Roster for World Championship
April 30, 2025 | Men's Ice Hockey
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Freshman Cole Hutson of the Boston University men's ice hockey team has been added to the United States roster for the 2025 IIHF Men's World Championship, USA Hockey announced on Wednesday.
Hutson is the third Terrier to join the roster, as former BU standouts Clayton Keller of Utah Hockey Club and Alex Vlasic of the Chicago Blackhawks were among the first 18 players named to the squad on April 24. In addition to the three skaters, Jeff Kealty ('98) is the general manager for the team.
A native of Chicago, Hutson had a sensational season for the Terriers as he helped BU reach the national title game. In addition to being named a First Team All-American, Hutson won the Tim Taylor Award as the National Rookie of the Year in addition to being named Hockey East Rookie of the Year and New England Rookie of the Year. Hutson not only led all NCAA freshmen in points (48) and assists (34), but finished first among all NCAA defensemen in points and points per game (1.23). His 14 goals ranked second among the nation's blue liners, as did his 34 helpers. Hutson was named Beanpot MVP as well as Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Toledo Regional.
This will not be Hutson's first time representing the United States in a major international tournament this year, as he won gold in January at the World Junior Championship. Hutson was dominant at World Juniors, becoming the first defensemen to lead that tournament in scoring, as he totaled three goals and eight assists to pace all skaters in points. Hutson also won gold at the 2023 World Under-18 Championship and silver at the 2024 edition of that tournament.
Team USA will train in Düsseldorf, Germany, starting on Friday, May 2, and play a pre-tournament game there against Germany on May 4. The U.S. will open play in the IIHF Men's World Championship against Denmark on May 9 at 2:20 p.m. ET. All U.S. games in the tournament will air live on NHL Network.
