No. 14/15 Terriers to Face Colgate in Sunday's PL Title Game on CBS Sports Network

The No. 14/15 Boston University men's lacrosse team will look to win its second conference tournament title in the last four years when the second-seeded Terriers face fifth-seeded Colgate in the Patriot League championship game on Saturday morning at Michie Stadium.

Sunday's game will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network beginning at 11:30 a.m.

TOURNAMENT HISTORY

  • The Terriers have qualified for the semifinals in all but one of their eight tournament appearances and have advanced to the title game in two straight seasons and three of the last four years.
  • BU is 8-6 all-time in the conference tournament, including a 1-1 record in the title game.
  • The Terriers defeated Army West Point at Nickerson Field to win the 2022 championship.

TERRIER TIDBITS

  • BU advanced to Sunday's title game thanks to a 12-10 win over third-seeded Lafayette in Friday's second semifinal.
  • Junior Jimmy Kohr led the Terriers with five points on two goals and three assists while senior Jimmy O'Connell notched four points on one goal and three assists.
  • Freshman Timothy Shannehan (2g, 1a) and sophomore Tyler Fox (1g, 2a) tallied three points apiece while senior Zach Travaglini scored twice and freshman Ben Morris chipped in one goal and one assist.
  • Freshman Andrew Pape, sophomore Donald Varnerin and junior Tommy Garofalo each found the back of the net as well.
  • In addition to his goal, Varnerin led the Terriers with six ground balls against Lafayette, which matched his career high.
  • Freshman Madden Murphy was excellent at the faceoff X, winning 15 of his 24 attempts and gathering four ground balls.
  • O'Connell led the Terriers with two caused turnovers, including one that led directly to a goal and another that was due to a fantastic diving effort at midfield.
  • Junior Matt Freeman totaled three ground balls and also had a caused turnover.
  • O'Connell was named PL Offensive Player of the Week and earned a spot on the USILA Team of the Week after recording a career-high eight points on three goals and a career-best five assists last weekend against Colgate.
  • He leads BU in points (65) and assists (33), ranking eighth in the NCAA in assists and 13th in the country in points.
  • In addition to his 41 goals, Kohr has chipped in 11 assists and is third on the squad with a career-high 52 points.
  • Kohr is the fifth different Terrier to score 40+ goals in the last three seasons; no other school in the country has produced more 40-goal scorers in that span than BU.
  • Shannehan, the reigning PL Rookie of the Year, leads all NCAA rookies with 57 points (30g, 27a).
  • BU and Colgate are the only two teams in the country with three players totaling 52 or more points this season.
  • Murphy, the reigning PL Faceoff Specialist of the Week, has won 64.6% of his faceoffs over the last two games, going 31-for-48.
  • BU continues to be one of the top riding teams in the nation, ranking second in the NCAA and first in the PL in opponent clear percentage (.738).
  • The Terriers forced seven failed clears on Friday against Lafayette and forced Colgate into eight failed clears last weekend.
  • BU enters Sunday with the top-ranked man-up unit in the NCAA, as they have converted on 58.8% of their EMOs this season.

HISTORY AGAINST THE RAIDERS

  • BU is 11-4 all-time against Colgate, having won five straight and eight of nine.
  • That includes a 14-12 triumph last weekend at Nickerson Field.
  • The Terriers won two one-goal thrillers against Colgate last year, erasing a 10-2 deficit in Hamilton on the last day of the regular season to earn a 13-12 triumph before defeating the Raiders in triple overtime at Nickerson in a PL quarterfinal game.
  • The Terriers have averaged 15.4 goals per game during their five-game win streak against Colgate.

SCOUTING COLGATE

  • Colgate's run to the title game began with a 14-10 win at fourth-seeded Lehigh on Tuesday before a 16-13 upset of top-seeded Army West Point in the semifinals on Friday.
  • Friday's triumph was Colgate's third ranked win of the season, and five of the Raiders' seven losses have been to ranked foes.
  • Liam Connor ranks third in the NCAA in assists per game (3.0) and is fifth in points per game (5.13), with brother Rory (4.93 ppg) in eighth.
  • Jack Turner is ninth in the nation in goals per game (3.06).
  • Max Yates and John Carrabine lead Colgate with 69 ground balls apiece while Carrabine has collected a team-best 28 caused turnovers.
  • Matt LaCombe made 24 saves against Army on Friday and now owns an 11.73 goals-against average and a .511 save percentage.
