Women’s Basketball Adds Garner to Coaching Staff

August 26, 2025

BOSTON – The Boston University women's basketball program has hired Capree Garner as the director of operations ahead of the 2025-26 season, head coach Melissa Graves formally announced on Tuesday (Aug. 26).

"I am thrilled to welcome Capree to the Terrier family," said Graves. "She brings a wealth of experience both on and off the floor, including her previous work in the Patriot League. Her attention to detail, tireless work ethic and love for mentorship through the game of basketball are all reasons why I am really looking forward to working alongside her. I'm excited to witness Capree's continued growth and am grateful for the positive energy she will bring to our program on a daily basis."

Garner fills the role that Erica Balman previously occupied. Earlier in the summer, Balman accepted an assistant coach position at UMass Lowell.

Arriving to Terrier Town with over three years of experience on the bench in college basketball, Garner most recently spent one season at Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Last season, she helped develop the Hawks' guards, including All-MEAC second team selection Zamara Haynes. UMES recorded an 8-6 MEAC record and reached the MEAC semifinals.

No stranger to the Patriot League, Garner was the Director of Basketball Operations at American for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. In addition to managing logistics for the Eagles' practices, travels, and other duties, she assisted the coaching staff by working with the post position players on scouting reports and opponent preparation in her second year.

Prior to entering the college ranks as a coach, Garner was the co-head coach at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Olney, Md. for one season.

Garner began her collegiate playing career at Harford Community College, where she became the all-time leading scorer in Maryland junior college history with 1,497 career points from 2012-14, receiving Junior College All-American first team honors. She later transferred to UMBC for the 2014-15 season, picking up America East second-team all-conference recognition in 2015 after serving as a team captain.

Garner earned her Associate's degree in general studies from Harford in 2014 and later a Bachelor's degree in media & communication studies from UMBC in 2016.
