Terriers Stumble in Second Half at Loyola Maryland, 74-57

BALTIMORE, Md. – On the road for one contest, the Boston University men's basketball team dropped a 74-57 decision at Loyola Maryland Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers (7-12, 2-4 PL) led all of the first half but were unable to overcome an off-day in 3-point shooting and 16-8 disadvantage in turnovers, as the Greyhounds (6-13, 2-4 PL) shot 51.9 percent in the second to pull away.
Sophomore Ben Defty earned his second consecutive double-double with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Both freshmen Chance Gladden (13 pts.) and Sam Hughes (12 pts.) scored in double figures with Gladden totaling four assists. Hughes went 4-for-9 (.444) from behind the arc, while the rest of the team combined for 2-for-20 (.100).
For the Greyhounds, Emmett Adair tallied 17 points off the bench with the help of two 3-pointers. Braeden Speed drained three treys on his way to 14 points, while Jonas Sirtautas earned 12 points. Carter Berg-McLean and Sebastien Emenalo combined for 15 points and 13 rebounds to help Loyola outscore BU in second-chance points, 17-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Defty won the tip and quickly scored a layup plus the bonus free throw, as part of a 7-0 start capped by two more free throws at 17:53.
- The Greyhounds chipped away and pulled within one at 13:37 (11-10) and 12:04 (14-13), respectively, but the Terriers had a response each time to stay ahead on the scoreboard.
- Leading by two (17-15) with 10:27 left in the half, Defty hit a pair of free throws and Hughes added a 3-pointer during a 9-0 run finished by junior Quinn Nielsen's two made free throws at 8:32.
- Junior Michael McNair scored BU's final field goal of the half off a pull-up jumper to pull ahead, 36-30, with 1:07 remaining in the half.
- The Greyhounds responded with a 14-2 run over the next six minutes of action capped by Speed's 3-pointer at 15:17 to give Loyola the lead for good.
- The two teams exchanged blows during the next seven minutes with Defty converting on a 3-point play to cut BU's deficit to one (56-55) with 8:10 left.
- Loyola though scored 15 straight points over the following five minutes to pull away for the win.
LOOKING AHEAD
- The Terriers return home to host Lafayette on Wednesday (Jan. 21) at 6 p.m. following an 83-67 road victory back on Jan. 7.
- McNair totaled a career-high 29 points with help of five 3-pointers off eight attempts.
- BU shot 53.4 FG% and held the Leopards to 45.9 FG% with a 42-28 advantage in rebounds and 10-3 lead in made 3-pointers.
