All-Around Effort Propels Men's Basketball to 83-67 Victory at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – Highlighted by junior Michael McNair's career-high 29 points and freshman Sam Hughes' first-ever double-double, the Boston University men's basketball team posted an 83-67 victory at Lafayette Wednesday night.
With the help of 21 assists, the Terriers (6-10, 1-2 PL) shot 53.4 percent from the field and more than tripled the Leopards (4-12, 1-2) in made 3-pointers, 10-3. BU also out-rebounded Lafayette, 42-28, and finished in single digits for turnovers in the third straight contest.
McNair topped his previous high of 28 points scored at Penn State shooting 11-for-17 with five 3-pointers off eight attempts alongside five rebounds and two assists. Hughes added a pair of buckets from behind the arc on his way to 10 points while adding a personal-best 10 rebounds and career-tying four assists. Hampered by foul trouble in the first half, sophomore Ben Defty tallied 13 points of his 15 points in the second, and freshman Donte Tisinger added 13 points with five assists.
Down by as many as 16 points late in the first half, Lafayette rallied to pull within four in the second, but the Terriers scored nine straight to grab control of the contest. Mark Butler was one of four Leopards to scire in double figures with 17 points while both Caleb Williams and Christian Humphrey-Rembert tallied 10 points apiece. Shareef Jackson added 12 as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Phillips tied the game for the second and final time, 8-8, with a layup at 13:52, McNair gave BU the lead for good with his first of five 3-pointers to spark an 11-0 run.
- Tisinger added his first trey, and sophomore Azmar Abdullah hit all three free throws and capped the run with a layup at 11:23.
- McNair struck again to extend the lead to 32-16 at 6:42 and beat the buzzer with a deep 3-pointer to enter the locker room ahead, 42-31, having scored 18 points.
- After Defty hit both free throws for 46-35 lead at 18:04, the Leopards chipped away and pulled to within four, 48-44, at 15:15 on Bevilacqua's pair of free throws.
- Williams responded to Hughes' 3-pointer with one of his own to keep the deficit at four, but then Tisinger responded with a 3-pointer and jumper as part of a 9-0 spurt finished by Abdullah's drive to the hoop at 11:16.
- The Terriers kept their lead at double digits for the rest of the contest with Hughes scoring from behind the arc for BU's largest lead, 77-59, at 3:23.
- Hughes became the fifth active Terrier to earn a double-double and second this season after Defty, who claimed his third last weekend against American.
- Hughes reached double digits in points for the seventh time and topped his previous high of six rebounds set at Navy by four total.
- McNair reached 20+ points for the fifth time this season and hit at least four 3-pointers for the seventh time.
- Tisinger scored 10+ points for the third time after last recording 11 at New Hampshire and 14 vs. VTSU Johnson.
- Gladden dished out seven assists for the second time in four contests and has now earned at least five total for the sixth time.
- BU improved to 22-11 all-time against Lafayette by scoring its most points in the series since an 84-82 road victory on Feb. 27, 2019.
- BU will return home to host Army West Point on Saturday (Jan. 10) at 1 p.m.
- Both home teams won last season with the Terriers earning a 71-63 victory at Case Gym and the Black Knights posting a 68-62 win at Christl Arena.
- Senior Ben Roy was the lone Terrier to score 10+ pts. in both games with career-high 17 pts. on the road.
