Boston University's most accomplished men's tennis player
and one of the nation's finest during his collegiate years,
Bob Green enjoyed a six-year stint on the professional tour
following graduation.
A three-year Team MVP, who registered 49 career wins, Green's
totals could have been of a higher magnitude, had he spent
his entire career at Boston University. Following a stellar
freshman campaign, in which he won the ECAC Division II Singles
Championship and the singles and doubles titles at the Yankee
Conference Tournament, Green transferred to the University
of Texas.
However, he returned to Boston University for his junior
and senior years, and quickly went about re-establishing himself
as one of the region's top performers. He served as team captain
and earned his second MVP Award during his junior year, when
he enjoyed an ITCA national ranking of 29th.
During his final year, Green was selected to represent Region
I at the NCAA Championships, marking the first time a Terrier
has participated at nationals.
A member of the University's prestigious Presidential Scholars
Program, Green demonstrated his talents extended to the classroom.
He earned the E. Ray Speare Award as the Outstanding Scholar-
Athlete of the Year, and was one of three national collegiate
tennis players to receive an ITCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Award.
Following graduation, he commenced a successful professional
career by earning ATP Rookie of the Year honors in 1984. He
achieved a career-high world ranking of 37th, and competed
in several Grand Slam Tournaments, including the 1984 U.S.
Open, in which he suffered a third round defeat to John McEnroe.
