PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Despite sophomore Lucy Johnson's second straight two-goal performance, the Boston University field hockey team dropped a 3-2 contest on Sunday afternoon at Lennon Family Field in its first road contest of the 2026 season.

Johnson gave the Terriers leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but the Friars scored the final two goals of the contest and both teams now stand at 1-1 on the young season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Just like it did in Friday's season opener, BU got on the board early, as senior Alex Purcell executed a perfect restart with a long drive that caught the PC backfield by surprise and found Johnson, who dribbled around goalkeeper Ava Porter on the right side to create space and open the scoring just 3:22 into the contest.
After BU took a 1-0 lead into the second quarter, Charlotte Lorden equalized for the Friars in the 18th minute.
A missed opportunity for the Terriers came in the 27th minute when senior Bella Bergner drew a penalty stroke while trying to get into the circle but the stroke attempt by sophomore Rachel Turer clanged off the right post.
The Terriers did however take another lead in the final minute of the opening half only to have the home team respond moments later to create another deadlock heading into the break.
Freshman Jenna Park received a pass from Turer and cut through the PC defense before penetrating the circle and finding Johnson on the far side. Johnson curled around and executed an elevated backhand that Porter tipped high up before the ball dropped just over the goal line for a 2-1 lead.
The Friars marched down the field, responding just 23 seconds later with a near-post redirect by Carly van Benten to create a 2-2 score at the half.
PC got what would be the game-winner just 1:16 into the third quarter when van Benten raced to tip a Piper Cline through ball to the boards at the right post.
BU put two shots on goal later in the third quarter but Porter made both stops to keep the Friars ahead.
Senior Sophie Ortyl tied her career high with 10 saves, including five in the fourth quarter to keep it a one-goal game.
Turer added a pair of defensive saves in the second half to aid Ortyl and prevent the Friars from extending their lead.

GAME NOTES

All four of Johnson's career goals have come in the past two games while Purcell has three assists already this season after entering the year with two in her BU career.
PC held an 18-7 advantage in shots and earned five corners to BU's three.
Porter had three saves in goal for the Friars.
