AMHERST, Mass. - The Boston University field hockey team faced its first ranked opponent of the season on Friday and dropped a 5-1 road contest to No. 11 Massachusetts at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.

Graduate student Maddie Hudson scored her second goal of the season for the Terriers, who move to 1-2 on the season. UMass got a two-goal effort from Emily Barrett and improved to 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UMass was strong out of the gate and built a 4-0 lead just over 10 minutes into the contest.
Kristy Leonard opened the scoring at the 2:25 mark when she put in a rebound from the middle of the circle.
Less than two minutes later, Isla Campbell tipped in an offering from Lina Kroeger for a 2-0 UMass lead.
Barrett got her first goal off a corner in the seventh minute and then added another at the 10:10 mark with a long shot from the top right of the circle.
BU got on the board at 28:17 when sophomore Rachel Turer brought the ball up the right side of the field and found Hudson, who cut towards the right post and hesitated before slotting the ball past UMass goalkeeper Rozárie Mrázová.
However, the Minutewomen quickly answered, earning a corner as time ran out in the opening half and taking full advantage of it with a goal from Neva Eisagna from the top of the circle.
After six goals were scored in the opening half, the defenses were up to the task in the latter half.
In the final quarter, shots were five apiece and BU held a 4-1 advantage in corners but was unable to cut into the four-goal deficit.

GAME NOTES

Senior Sophie Ortyl made seven saves in goal for the Terriers.
UMass held a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal and earned 10 corners to BU's four.
Mrázová had three saves for the Minutewomen.
