An outstanding performer on the field and in the classroom,
Doris McMahon was the standard by which all Sargent College
athletes were judged.
This 1950 graduate competed in several sports, served as
a coach, and amassed unprecedented totals in the student-athlete
point system. In fact, her amazing total reached such a high
level that the Athletic Association was forced to alter its
point system.
As such, Doris received the Twiness Award, which is the top
honor bestowed on a Sargent College student athlete.
As an undergraduate, she starred for the volleyball, basketball,
and fistball squads, leading each to successful years. By
the end of her freshman year, however, she had amassed a point
total that the Athletic Association determined would be nearly
impossible for anyone to match.
While at Sargent, Doris also acquired official's ratings
in field hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and softball. In her
senior year, she was named head coach of freshmen basketball,
one of the highest honors that was bestowed upon a student.
Doris also coached youth field hockey sessions.
Outside of school, Doris played field hockey for the Boston
Field Hockey Association and the Northeast Field Hockey Team,
and gained honorary status on the U.S. Field Hockey Team.
In addition, after graduation, she was President of the New
York State American Association for Health, Physical Education
and Dance, and she was a member of the Association for Women
in Physical Education in New York State.
