While a student in Sargent College, Caryl Newhof played for
club and class teams in the Boston area in six sports: field
hockey, lacrosse, softball, basketball, and soccer. Though
she excelled in all six sports, it was field hockey where
she enjoyed the most success.
Newhof played right half for the Boston I team from 1946-50
and for the Hampshire team from 1951-1964. In 1947, playing
for Boston, Newhof was a teammate of Hall of Famer Gretchen
Schuyler and had her first experience against an international
team. It would not be her last.
Later that fall, she made the North East Reserve Team. Her
selection to that All-Star team started a string of 17 consecutive
years which she played for the North East All-Star team or
was a reserve. During those years, she also served as team
captain several times.
Newhof also played for several national squads and toured
internationally. In 1950, she was with the U.S. Touring team
that traveled to South Africa. She was honorable mention to
the U.S. Reserve team twice before making first team in 1958.
In 1959, she played for the U.S. Touring team again and played
in Holland, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.
Newhof has stayed with the sport of field hockey serving
in many capacities. For 30 years, she was a national umpire
and was recognized as both a national player and an official
at the IFWHA Conference in 1963.
