Sam Pino capped his B.U. career by winning the coveted Bulger
Lowe Award given annually to New England's top collegiate
football player. Known as "Slam Bam Sam," he has
been termed by Donelli as one of the two best fullbacks he
ever coached; the other was Hall of Famer John Kastan. Typical
of Sam's performance under pressure was his exciting 67-yard
touchdown run in a 7-6 loss to Boston College before 40,000
fans at Fenway Park in 1954, a season in which he gained over
1,000 yards and in which the Terriers missed an undefeated
record by only two points. Named to the All-New England and
All-East teams and cited for honorable mention by various
Al-America selectors, Pino also participated in the North-South
Shrine Bowl game in Miami. He went on to play for the Green
Bay Packers and the Toronto Argonauts before turning to teacher-coaching
and real estate. He taught physical education at South Boston
High School and devoted much of his spare time to the supervision
of youth programs.
