Winner of the 1981-82 Morris Trophy as the nation's Outstanding
Collegiate Sailor, three-time All-America Ken Read was the
finest male sailor ever to compete for Boston University.
He was an complete sailor who excelled in all types of competition,
including sloops (large boats), dinghies (small boats), single-handeds,
and team racing (three-on-three).
During his four-year career, he guided Boston University to
two national titles, a pair of second-place finishes, and
six New England Championships.
As a freshman during the 1979-80 season, he led the Terriers
to victories in five freshmen regattas, a first-place finish
in the Priddy Trophy as the New England Freshman Fall Champions,
and second place in the Nickerson Trophy--the New England
Freshman Spring Championships.
The following year, as a sophomore, he won six races (the
Anderson Regatta, the Yale Invitational, the Lane Trophy,
the Oberg Trophy, the Danmark Trophy, and the Truxt Umsted
Regatta), and finished second in the Boston Dighy Cup. His
accomplishments earned him his first All-America honors.
During the 1981-82 season, Read owned the collegiate sailing
scene, winning a pair of national titles, and helping the
team to a second-place finish in a third event. After capturing
the New England honors in the Sloop and Team Championships,
Read sailed to victory in the National Sloop and Dinghy Championships,
and finished second in the National Team Championships. In
addition, he was named the National Collegiate Outstanding
Sailor, and garnered All-America status for the second consecutive
season.
As a senior, he capped his brilliant career with six first-place
finishes, including the New England Sloops and Dinghy Championships,
a second-place performance at the National Team Championships,
and was again named All-America.
Following graduation, he won a pair of J-24 World Championships
(1985 and 1986) and was named the Rolex Yachtsman of the Year.
