Charlie Thomas attended Boston University from 1939-1942
and established himself as one of the Terriers' finest three-sport
athletes. He lettered in football, basketball, and baseball
as a sophomore and continued his athletic prowess his junior
and senior years.
On the gridiron he was an outstanding running halfback and
pass catcher. As a substitute in the first varsity game of
his college career he scored a touchdown in the waning minutes
of the game to insure a Terrier victory. The HUB, BU's yearbook,
reported on his catch and run: "He caught the ball and
raced along the sidelines, reversed, side-stepped, and straight-armed
his way over 45 yards." From then on, he was a starter.
He beat out four upperclassmen for the starting shortstop
job on the baseball team as a sophomore and held that position
for the remainder of his playing days at BU. Against Boston
College in the 1941 season he hit a towering home run for
the game's winning run.
He was a guard on the basketball team and continually was
among the top scorers. His speed, ability and determination
in this and every other sport made him the outstanding athlete
that he was.
