Terrier Twelve - #3: Men's Lacrosse Reaches New Heights in Fourth Season

August 11, 2017

For the 10th straight year, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.

Coming in at No. 3 in this year's Terrier 12 is the men's lacrosse team reaching new heights in the program's fourth season.

Seventeen seniors from the inaugural team led the Terriers to the program's first-ever Patriot League postseason berth in 2017, capping their collegiate careers with an impressive season. BU began the year with a thrilling 8-7 double-overtime win at Providence to spark a 7-0 run to start the season. That unbeaten stretch included a fantastic finish at then-No. 18 Navy, when Jack Wilson scored with just 1.6 seconds on the clock to break a 7-7 tie.

Head coach Ryan Polley was recognized for his incredible efforts in leading the Terriers. Polley was the 2017 Patriot League Coach of the Year and was also chosen as the 2017 New England Division I Coach of the Year. Under Polley's guidance, the Terriers reached as high as 15th in the Inside Lacrosse media poll during the year, their highest-ever national ranking. BU also went 6-1 against non-conference opponents in 2017, including wins over NCAA Tournament teams Air Force and Bryant. That sensational record helped the Terriers secure a top-20 RPI at the end of the season.

The road to the program's first-ever postseason appearance included a pair of overtime victories at Nickerson Field. James Burr delivered the game-winner against Loyola Maryland to officially clinch a playoff spot on April 15. Then, the following Friday, Cal Dearth lifted BU to a 12-11 victory over Holy Cross to give BU homefield advantage in the conference quarterfinals. The Terriers cruised to a 10-4 win over Lehigh before a hard-fought loss to Army West Point in the league semifinals. BU finished the year with a program-high 12 wins and a program-low five losses.

Many individuals had career years for the Terriers in 2017. BU boasted its first two All-Americans, as Dearth and senior goalkeeper Christian Carson-Banister were not only USILA All-Americans but Inside Lacrosse All-Americans as well. Carson-Banister was a third-team honoree while Dearth garnered honorable mention status.

The All-America accolades were just two of a number of individual awards for Carson-Banister, who finished third in the nation with an impressive .586 save percentage. He was the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, a USILA Scholar All-American, a Senior CLASS Award candidate and a First Team All-ECAC selection, just to name a few. He joined Dearth, senior Dominick Calisto and senior Greg Wozniak as a USILA North/South All-Star and was one of six (Calisto, Dearth, Wilson Wozniak, Brendan Homire) All-Patriot League honorees.

Dearth and Calisto made more history by becoming the first two Terriers to be drafted into Major League Lacrosse. Both players were selected in the fourth round and both have made their professional debuts this summer. Dearth has tallied four goals for the Boston Cannons while Calisto will help the Ohio Machine defense in the 2017 MLL playoffs.
