Field hockey head coach Sally Starr knew she could always count on Lori Heywood. She knew that Heywood was always ready to play, as evidenced by her starting every one of the 78 games the Terriers played during her career. Starr knew that her goalie would generally stop the opponents' shots with her incredible 0.86 career goals-against average. Finally, and more importantly, she knew that her team would generally win with Heywood in the cage after posting a career record of 47-25-5.
Heywood manifested her talents from the outset as she was named the Boston Four Co-Rookie of the Year and Honorable Mention All-Region after compiling a 10-6-1 record with a .901 save percentage and a 0.87 goals-against average her freshman year.
She came back her sophomore year to compile a 13-4-2 record with a .913 save percentage and a 0.64 goals-against average. She allowed just 13 goals during the year, while she shutout 11 teams. Heywood was named All-Region and First Team All-Conference, while the team was ranked ninth in the nation.
Her junior year she was 11-8-1 with a .882 save percentage and a 0.94 goals-against average. Among her six shutouts was a 1-0 blanking over then-No. 4 Northeastern and a 2-0 win over then-No. 7 Duke. She capped off her career with a 14-7-1 record, an .872 save percentage, a 0.99 goals-against average as a senior and was named the conference's MVP as well as First Team All-Region and Third Team All-American.
"Lori always rose to the challenge," said Starr. "The tougher the game, the better she played. She thrived in that type of environment. She had a quiet confidence and that certainly helped our defense."
