Senior Danielle DeCoste tallies game-winner
BOSTON, MA (Oct. 6) -- Senior forward Danielle DeCoste (Fall River, MA) scored at the 6:18 mark of overtime to lead the No. 13 ranked Boston University field hockey team to a 2-1 (OT) win over Massachusetts on a crisp autumn evening at Nickerson Field.
The Minutewomen scored the game's first goal at 18:56 of the first half as sophomore back Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) tallied on a penalty corner from junior midfielders Patty Robinson (Norwood, MA) and Lucy Koch (Ipswich, MA).
UMass held a 1-0 advantage at intermission.
Boston University senior back Samantha Stuart (Bridgton, ME) tied the game at 1-1 with her goal from sophomore midfielder Kerry Carney (Yorktown Heights, NY) and Jaclyn Mele (Fairfield, NJ) at 25:06.
The two teams played scoreless hockey for the final 25 minutes of regulation to force the extra session.
At the 6:18 of overtime, DeCoste notched her first game-winning goal of the season to give Sally Starr's team the 2-1 win.
Massachusetts goalie Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) had 11 saves, while her B.U. counterparts senior Noreen Flanagan (Red Bank, NJ) and sophomore Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, NH) combined for one save.
The Terriers outshot the Minutewomen ,14 -3, and held the advantage in penalty corner situations,15-2.
B.U. is 9-8-3 all-time versus Massachusetts.
The Terriers return to the field on Friday, October 8 to play Drexel in an America East conference game at Boston University's Nickerson Field at 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES: The overtime game was B.U.'s first in the last 16 games (October 21, 1998-3-2 loss at Providence) and first at Nickerson Field since October 28, 1997 (3-2, W vs. Princeton)... Senior forward Danielle DeCoste's moved into 9th place tie on the Terriers all-time scoring list with (22 goals-19 assists-63 points... B.U has outshot opponents 230-101 this season and are 7-0 when leading at the half.
