Sixth NCAA Appearance: This weekend marks the sixth time that the Boston University field hockey team has appeared in the NCAA tournament....The Terriers are 3-6 in NCAA tournament play.
FOURTH TRIP TO NCAA'S IN THE 90s: The Terriers are enjoying their fourth trip to the NCAA tournament in the 90s. B.U. also appeared with field hockey's best in 1991, 1993, and 1996.
FIRST NCAA BERTH IN FOUR YEARS: Boston University returns to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1996.
RECORD-TYING SEASON: The 1999 Boston University Terriers have equalled its team-record for wins in a season with 17. Head coach Sally Starr's teams have also registered 17 wins in 1996 (17-5) and 1985 (17-4-2).
SERIES HISTORY VS. MASSACHUSETTS: The Terriers are 9-8-3 all-time versus the Minutewomen, including a 2-1 (OT) victory on October 6 at Nickerson Field....The two teams have met three times in the NCAAs, with UMass holding a 2-1 edge.
SERIES HISTORY VS. CONNECTICUT: Connecticut leads the all-time series, 13-6, including a 3-0 win at Storrs on October 27. The two teams met in the 1985 Final Four with the Huskies prevailing, 2-1.
SERIES HISTORY VS. BROWN: Brown leads the all-time series, 1-3-2. The last meeting between the Bears and the Terriers occurred on September 24, 1987, a 1-1 (2OT) tie in Providence. B.U.'s only win vs. Brown came on October 1, 1985, 1-0.
BOSTON UNIVERSITY VS. 1999 NCAA FIELD: Sally Starr's squad is 1-4 against the 1999 NCAA Tournament field this season. The Terriers defeated UMass, 2-1 (OT), and lost to UConn, 3-0; Maryland, 6-3; Old Dominion, 6-5; and Wake Forest, 1-0.
NCAA EXPERIENCE: B.U. seniors Jessica Alcorta, Danielle DeCoste, Noreen Flanagan, Tina McDavitt, and Samantha Stuart were all on the 1996 team that lost, 5-4 to Princeton. Alcorta and Flanagan started the game, while McDavitt was a substitute. Flanagan recorded seven saves in the loss.
SENIOR SUCCESS: The Terriers senior class currently is 57-28 over the last four years, second-best for a class at B.U. The Class of 97 had a program-best 60 wins.
FLANAGAN HAS SEEN IT ALL: Senior goalie Noreen Flanagan has started all 85 games she has appeared in as a Terrier. Flanagan is 52-28-0 in 5,261 minutes of action with 378 saves, a .739 save percentage, a 1.77 goals against average, and 24 shutouts.
TERRIERS SWEEP AMERICA EAST AWARDS: For the first time in the 11-year history of the America East Conference one team was awarded the player, rookie, and coach of the year...that team is the 1999 Boston University field hockey team. Senior midfielder Jessica Alcorta, a fifth-year senior from Demarest, NJ, was named America East Player of the Year at the conference's pre-tournament banquet on Thursday, November 4. Jane Rogers of Watertown, MA was awarded the conference's Rookie of the Year, and head coach Sally Starr was honored with her fourth America East Coach of the Year award. Starr also took home the honor in 1991, 1993, and 1996.
ALL-CONFERENCE SELECTIONS: Seven Terriers were named to the 1999 America East All-Conference Team... Seniors Danielle DeCoste, Jessica Alcorta, Tina McDavitt, Jacyln Mele, and junior Robyn Kenney were named to the First Team... Sophomores Kerry Carney and Jane Rogers occupied spots of the Second Team... Alcorta became the first player in conference history to be named to the First Team three times.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: At the conclusion of B.U.'s 2-0 America East Championship win over Northeastern, four Terriers were named to the All-Tournament Team. Seniors Jessica Alcorta and Samantha Stuart, and sophomores Susan Harrington and Jane Rogers were honored. Rogers was also named Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament, scoring three of the Terriers four goals.
ROGERS SCORES: America East Rookie of the Year, Jane Rogers leads the Terriers in scoring with 14 goals and six assists for 34 points. The 34 points is the third highest single-season scoring output by a Terrier. Only Michelle Barnard in 1996 (13-35-61) and Vera Schoenfeld in 1995 (19-15-53) have scored more points in a single season.
POLL POSITION: All season the Terriers have been ranked in the NFHCA/STX Division I Coaches Poll.
