Terriers Pick Up Road Victory

CAMBRIDGE, MA (Nov. 23) - Freshman guard Alison Argentieri (Hornell, NY) scored a career-high 21 points to lead four Terriers in double figures, including five crucial free-throws in the final :40 seconds, as Boston University edged Harvard, 75-67, in women's basketball action play this evening at Lavietes Pavilion.
The Terriers are 2-0 to open up the season for the first time since the 1994-95 season.
B.U. made its first five field goals, two each by junior forward Alison Dixon (Norwood, MA) and sophomore center Anne Nelson (Blue Bell, PA) and one by sophomore guard Annie Tomasini (Boston,MA), en route to an early 10-0 lead. The Terriers held on the lead for much of the early going of the first half.
Trailing, 15-5, with 16:20 to play in the first half, Harvard went on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 15-14 with 11:41 to go in the half. Highlighting the run for the Crimson were Courtney Egelhoff and Katie Gates who each connected on three-point field goals during the run.
The young Terriers withstood the run and proceeded to blank the Crimson 7-0 during the next two minutes to establish a more comfortable lead at 22-14.
Harvard, not to be outdone, tied the game at ,22-22, with 8:02 to go in the half, but would get no closer in trailing at halftime, 40-30.
B.U capitalized on 14 first half turnovers by Harvard and shot 44 % in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half the B.U. lead swelled to as much as 19, 56-37, with 13:30 to play in regulation, before the Crimson picked away to draw as close as five, 60-55, with 4:17 to play.
Harvard narrowed the game to four, 65-61, with 1:33 to play, but sophomore guard Jen Tulley (Old Orchard Beach, ME) and Argenitieri combined to make 8-of-9 free-throws in the final 1:30 to secure B.U.'s first victory in Cambridge since February 16, 1980.
Tonight's win marked the beginning of nine-game road trip, the longest in program history. The longest previous road trip occurred during the 1977-78 season, when B.U. played five games in an eight game span. B.U. heads west for the Fresno State Classic on Saturday, November 27 and Sunday, November 28. In Fresno, B.U. will play the hosts on Saturday, November 27th and Boise State on Sunday, November 28. The following weekend, B.U. heads south to North Carolina to play in the Davidson Tournament.
The Terriers will play Marshall on Saturday, December 4 and either Davidson or Stony Brook on Sunday, December 5. The road trip continues on Thursday, December 9, when Margaret McKeon embarks on her first America East game at New Hampshire. Two days later, Terrier assistant Cindy Blodgett returns to Maine as the Terriers take on the Black Bears in Augusta. On Tuesday, December 14, B.U. will travel to Columbus, OH to play the Ohio State Buckeyes. Boston University closes out the 20th century and its road trip playing at Wagner College in Staten Island, NY on December 29. The Terriers return home on January 2, 2000 to host Drexel University.
Sophomore Dia Dufault (Malone, NY) -15 points, Dixon -13 points and Tulley -11 points were B.U.'s other double figure scorers this evening.
Dixon also contributed a team-high eight rebounds and Argentieri and Dufault each had five steals.
Margaret McKeon's Terriers travel to Fresno, CA on Thanksgiving to prepare for the Fresno State Classic, beginning Friday, November 27. B.U. will play the hosts on Saturday and matchup with Boise State on Sunday.
Game Notes: Dixon now has 856 career points, she remains in 17th place on the Terriers all-time scoring list. Next on the list is Lynn Bay (93) who scored 893 career points.
