Against the Fresno Classic Field -Fresno State University - First meeting... Boston University has never faced a member of the Western Athletic Conference... In fact, the Terriers have never faced an opponent from the state of California.
-Boise State University - First meeting... The Terriers' first ever game against an opponent from the Big West Conference, as well as their first encounter with a team from the state of Idaho.
First Time in the Golden State The Fresno State Tournament marks the first time in 25 years of intercollegiate competition that the Boston University women's basketball team has traveled to the state of California... The Terriers have only paid one visit to the west coast, when they lost, 73-43, at the University of Portland on December 30, 1996.
In-Season Tournament History B.U. has played in 32 in-season tournaments... The Terriers are 30-36 in in-season tournaments... The last time B.U won an in-season tournament, occurred during the 1984-85 season, when the Terriers defeated North Florida, 69-57, on December 27, 1984 and Central Florida, 69-59, on December 28 to win the Queens Holiday Classic.
Harvard Recap - Boston University 75, Harvard 67 - November 23, 1999 CAMBRIDGE, MA- Freshman guard Alison Argentieri (Hornell, NY) scored a career-high 21 points to lead four Terriers in double figures, including five crucial free-throws in the final :40 seconds, as Boston University edged Harvard, 75-67, at the Crimson's Lavietes Pavilion... B.U. made its first five field goals, two each by junior forward Alison Dixon (Norwood, MA) and sophomore center Anne Nelson (Blue Bell, PA) and one by sophomore guard Annie Tomasini (Boston,MA), en route to an early 10-0 lead. The Terriers held on to the lead for much of the early going of the first half... Trailing, 15-5, with 16:20 to play in the first half, Harvard went on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 15-14 with 11:41 to go in the half. Highlighting the run for the Crimson were Courtney Egelhoff and Katie Gates who each connected on three-point field goals during the run... The young Terriers withstood the run and proceeded to blank the Crimson 7-0 during the next two minutes to establish a more comfortable lead at 22-14... Harvard, not to be outdone, tied the game at 22-22 with 8:02 to go in the half, but would get no closer in trailing at halftime, 40-30... B.U capitalized on 14 first-half turnovers by Harvard and shot 44 % in the first 20 minutes... In the second half, the B.U. lead swelled to as much as 19, 56-37, with 13:30 to play in regulation, before the Crimson picked away to draw as close as five, 60-55, with 4:17 to play... Harvard narrowed the game to four, 65-61, with 1:33 to play, but sophomore guard Jen Tulley (Old Orchard Beach, ME) and Argentieri combined to make 8-of-9 free-throws in the final 1:30 to secure B.U.'s first victory in Cambridge since February 16, 1980... Sophomore Dia Dufault (Malone, NY) -15 points, Dixon -13 points, and Tulley -11 points were B.U.'s other double figure scorers...Dixon also contributed a team-high eight rebounds and Argentieri and Dufault each had five steals.
Colgate Recap - Boston University 78, Colgate 58 - November 20, 1999 BOSTON, MA- Sophomore guard Dia Dufault (Malone, NY) tied a career-high with 25 points and junior forward Alison Dixon (Norwood, MA) added 24 points and 10 rebounds as Boston University downed Colgate, 78-58, in the season opener for both teams before 543 on "The Roof" Saturday afternoon... The win was B.U.'s first season-opening win since 1996-97... The Terriers (1-0) jumped out to an early 9-4 lead and held the lead until Colgate (0-1) tied the game, 18-18, with 10:21 to play in the first half... The Red Raiders held the lead until Boston University sophomore guard Jen Tulley (Old Orchard Beach, ME) connected on a jumper to tie the game at 28-28 with 6:08 remaining in the first half... B.U. went ahead, 31-28, on a three-point field goal from junior guard Pilar Prassas (Haddonfield, NJ) that sparked a 7-0 run... Colgate managed to go on a 9-2 run to close out the half and go into halftime tied at 37-37... Freshman guard Alison Argentieri (Hornell, NY) attempted a half-court shot that hit the front of the rim as the buzzer sounded... In the second half, the lead changed hands three times, before the Terriers pulled away... With Colgate leading 50-49 with 13:46 to play in regulation, B.U. went on a 17-2 run to take a commanding 66-52 lead with 7:56 to play. The run was highlighted by nine points from Dufault and four from freshman forward Rachel Werner (Glendale, Arizona)... The Red Raiders, who shot 33 % in the second half (9-of-27), managed just two field goals in the final 11 minutes... The Terriers closed out the game with a 10-2 run, and had its biggest lead at 78-57 with 1:33 to play... B.U. outscored Colgate, 41-21, in the second half and shot 53 % (18-of-34) in the final 20 minutes.
1999-2000 Captains Named Leading the Terriers into the millennium this season will be sophomore guard Annie Tomasini and sophomore forward Anne Nelson... Tomasini played in all 27 games last season averaging 1.2 ppg and 1.2 rpg... Nelson appeared in 22 games last season averaging 4.4 ppg and 2.3 rpg... Both players have started both games this season... Tomasini is averaging 2.5 pg and 2.0 apg, while Nelson adds 3.0 ppg and 2.5 rpg...
The "A" Team Four of B.U.'s starting five players have first names beginning with the letter "A"... They are freshman Alison Argentieri, junior Alison Dixon, and sophomores Annie Tomasini and Anne Nelson.
Looking for a November to Remember The Terriers are 24-20 all-time in the month of November and 2-0 this season... B.U.'s best winning percentage in the opening month occurred in 1994, when the team won both of its games... This year's squad will equal the most games played in November with four. The 1983-84 team was 3-1 in November.
Longest Road Trip Program History The Boston University women's basketball program is in the beginning of a nine-game road trip...The trip began on Tuesday, as the Terriers defeated Harvard, 75-67, in Cambridge... The longest previous road trip occurred during the 1977-78 season, when B.U. played five games in an eight-game span... After the Fresno State Classic, B.U. heads to North Carolina to play in the Davidson Tournament... The Terriers will play Marshall on Saturday, December 4 and either Davidson or Stony Brook on Sunday, December 5... The road trip continues on Thursday, December 9, when Margaret McKeon embarks on her first America East game at New Hampshire... Two days later, Terrier assistant Cindy Blodgett returns to Maine as the Terriers take on the Black Bears in Augusta... On Tuesday, December 14, B.U. will travel to Columbus, OH to play the Ohio State Buckeyes... The Terriers close out the 20th century and its road trip playing at Wagner College in Staten Island, NY on December 29.
Head Coach Margaret McKeon Hired on April 26, 1999, 31-year old Margaret McKeon is the fifth head coach in the history of the Boston University women's basketball program... A former standout point guard at St. John's University, McKeon brings a history of coaching success to the Terrier program... McKeon has served as an assistant coach at Arizona State (1991-93), the University of Houston (1993-95), and most recently, George Washington University (1995-99)... In four years at GW, McKeon helped the Colonials to three Atlantic-10 regular-season championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances, including an Elite Eight finish in 1997 and a final number 10 ranking in the CNN/USA TODAY poll.
Terrier Dog Bites B.U is 2-0 to start the season for the first time since the 1994-95 season... Terrier opponents have held the lead for only 7:03 out of 400 minutes this season... B.U. is shooting 79.4 % from the free-throw line (27-of-34) and 43.4 % from the floor (59-of-136)... The Terriers are shooting 80 % (8-of-10) from the free-throw line in the final two minutes... B.U. has forced opponents into 48 turnovers this season and are out-rebounding its foes, 42.9 to 39.5.
Looking Ahead to the 1999-2000 Season Though the Terriers return just one starter in junior Alison Dixon, there are 11 players who have had considerable playing time in the last two seasons... The Terriers completed the 1998-99 season with a disappointing 5-22 record, 2-16 in America East play... Since 1975-76, B.U. has accumulated an overall record of 306-310 (.496).
Quoting McKeon "It will obviously be a rebuilding year, but the team will be motivated and prepared. There are some young players on this team with good futures."
New Staff in Place McKeon has hired three assistants on her coaching staff - Jerry McLaughlin (Flagler 77) - Gabrielle Butler (Franklin & Marshall 85) and Cindy Blodgett (Maine 98)... A former head coach at Siena and Alaska-Anchorage, McLaughlin has also coached at Temple, New Mexico State, and Kentucky... Butler comes to B.U. after spending eight seasons as an assistant coach -the last four with Margaret McKeon - at George Washington University... Blodgett, who plays for the Sacramento Monarchs of the WNBA, led Maine to four America East conference titles and four straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament...At Maine, Blodgett set 18 University of Maine records including scoring with 3005 points in 118 games for an average of 25.5 ppg... The point total currently ranks as the fifth-highest career total in NCAA Division I history.
Dixon's Scoring Ranks High Alison Dixon is currently the highest-scoring B.U. player after two seasons of play... Entering this season,Dixon had 819 points in 54 career games... Dixon and Jill Sosnak (95) (791 points in 52 games) are the only two Terriers to score more than 700 points in their first two seasons.
Dixon Nearing 1,000 Point Plateau With 13 points at Harvard on Tuesday, Dixon now has 856 career points, to remain in 17th place on the Terriers' all-time scoring list. Next on the list is Lynn Bay (93), who scored 893 career points.
Twenty Something Junior forward Alison Dixon has scored 20 or more points in 30-of-56 career games for the Terriers.... Last season, Dixon scored 20 or more points in a game 11 times, including a career-high 30 points vs. Dartmouth on November 23... Last December, Dixon had a string of five straight 20-point games, tying a B.U. women's record... Debbie Miller (81) also had five straight 20-point efforts in 1979-80.
Dufault Delivers Sophomore guard Dia Dufault leads the Terriers in scoring (20.0 ppg) and free-throw percentage (88.9 %, 8-of-9)... In the season-opener against Colgate, Dufault equaled a career-high with 25 points in the Terriers' 78-58 win... At Harvard on Tuesday, Dufault netted 15 points, grabbed five rebounds and had a career-high five steals in B.U.'s 75-67 win.
There's More Than One Alison On This Team Freshman point guard Alison Argentieri is quiclky establishing her own identity for the Terriers... B.U. already had one Alison in Dixon, but Argentieri is certainly letting opponents know that there is more than one Alison on this team... Argentieri is leading the Terriers in minutes played (35.0 mpg) and has a better than 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio this season... On Tuesday night at Harvard, Argentieri scored a career-high 21 points in leading B.U. to a 75-67 victory over Harvard... Argentieri was 6-of-8 from the floor, 4-of-5 from three-point land, and made 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final :40... The 5-7 guard also ripped off a career-best five steals and dished out four assists... In the season opener, Argentieri had six points, seven assists, and four steals.
Timely Tulley Sophomore guard Jen Tulley has come off the bench this season to average 9.5 ppg and 4.0 rpg... At Harvard on Tuesday, Tulley scored a season-high 11 points and hauled in five rebounds in 24 minutes of action.
Werner A Key Off The Bench Freshman forward Rachel Werner has provided to be a key asset off the Terrier bench this season... In two games, Werner is averaging 7.0 ppg and 3.5 rpg... Werner scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds in her collegiate debut vs. Colgate on November 20.
Terriers Ink Five Recruits in Early Signing Period Boston University women's basketball coach Margaret McKeon has annouced that five players - forward Ashley Carr (Milwaukee, WI), guard Courtney Jones (Lafayette Hill, PA), guard Lashaunda Mitchell (Oyster Bay, NY), forward Marisa Moseley (Springfield, MA) and guard Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ) - signed national letters on intent during the early signing period from November 10 to November 17... Carr, a forward/center from Divine Savior Holy Angels, has led her team to a 32-12 record over the last two years, with two Greater Metro Conference Championships an two trips to the Wisconsin State Tournament... Jones, a 5-8 point guard from Mount Saint Joseph Academy, averaged 14.8 ppg, 4.0 apg, 4.0 spg and 3.0 rpg last season. She is also an outstanding student with a 3.923 grade point average... Mitchell, a guard from St. Dominic High School, led her squad to the 1998 New York State Class B Catholic Championship with a 20-7 record. She was a Newsday All-Long Island Second Team selection... Moseley, a forward from Longmeadow H.S., averaged 14.0 ppg and 8.9 rpg last season, as she led Longmeadow to the Western Massachusetts semifinals...Terhune, a 5-11 guard from Warren Hills H.S. (N.J.), averaged 20.5 ppg and 7.9 rpg last season... She was a First Team All-Conferecne, All-Area, All-West Jersey, and All-County selection last season and was only the second female to score over 1000 career points at Warren Hills during her junior season.
