Field Hockey At No. 15 In Latest Poll
October 11, 2000 | Field Hockey
Boston, MA-The Boston University field hockey team dips one spot to No. 15 in this week's STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll released October 10. The University of Maryland, with an 11-1 record and 19 first-place votes, remains number one in the poll.
Sally Starr's team (8-5, 5-1 America East) completed a 1-2 week that began with a tough 2-1, penalty stroke loss at UMass on October 4. The Terriers bounced back with a 2-1 victory at Drexel on October 6, before losing at Hofstra 3-0, on October 8. The loss to Hofstra was the Terriers' first conference defeat in 15 games, dating back to a 3-2 loss to New Hampshire in the America East Championship game on November 6, 1998.
The Terriers played arguably their best game of the season against the Minutewomen. The team trailed 1-0 late in the second half before Rachael Stillings' penalty corner goal with 9:12 left sent the game into overtime. After a scoreless overtime, the teams headed into penalty strokes where UMass came out on top in the second round of strokes.
B.U. bounced back in its next game against Drexel. Junior midfielder Felicia Cappabianca had a goal and an assist to lead the Terriers to a 2-1 win over the Dragons. Senior midfielder Robyn Kenney also scored for B.U., her fifth goal and 12th point on the season. Kenney's 12 points are a new career-high for the Third Team All-American from Whitehouse Station, NJ.
Unfortunately, the team's America East luck ran out on the turf at Hofstra Stadium that Sunday as the Lady Dutch dealt the Terriers a 3-0 loss. B.U. is now 8-5, 5-1 on the season. It was Hofstra's first-ever win against B.U. in six tries.
Kenney and senior forward Kate Cusick currently lead the Terriers in scoring, each with 5-2-12 in 13 games. Junior forward Jane Rogers is second, with 4-3-11 and junior Casey Holman is third with 4-0-8, also in 13 games. Cusick is currently in 11th place on the all-time scoring list with 61 points. She has 25-11-61 for her career.
Junior goalkeeper Susan Harrington is currently third in the conference with a 1.78 goals against average. She has played all 941:50 of the Terriers' season and has posted the second-highest win total in the conference with eight. Drexel's Heather Haigh has the most wins, nine. The Terriers have allowed the second-fewest goals in the conference, 25. No. 20 Northeastern and Maine have each allowed 26. Harrington is now 13-7 in her Terrier career.
The Terriers have outscored opponents 28-25 in 2000, 16-7 in conference games. The Terriers are outshooting opponents, 207-157 and hold a 96-89 advantage in penalty corners as well.
The Terriers will finish up their road schedule this week with stops at New Hampshire on October 11 and Providence College on October 14 before returning home, where they are 4-1, for the final five regular season games of the 2000 season, starting with Dartmouth on Sunday, October 15.
