Rogers Four Points Lead Terriers Past Dartmouth, 3-1
October 15, 2000 | Field Hockey
BOSTON, MA -- Junior forward Jane Rogers (Watertown, MA) scored 10:36 into the second half to break a 1-1 tie as the Boston University field hockey team defeated Dartmouth College, 3-1 at Nickerson Field on Sunday. Rogers also added a pair of assists to finish with a four-point afternoon for the Terriers, who improve to 10-6 on the season. Dartmouth falls to 6-4. It is the 14th-straight season the Terriers have won at least 10 games under head coach Sally Starr.
The Big Green got on the board 11:34 into the game when Rebekka Stucker (Queensbury, NY) tipped a centering pass from Carolyn Steele (Clinton, NY) over B.U. goalkeeper Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, NH) for an early 1-0 lead.
Starr called a timeout 15 minutes into the half and the message was received. B.U. came out and began to take the play to Dartmouth.
"(Dartmouth) was playing our right side," said Starr. "We made some positional changes and a few tactical adjustments and talked about pressing them and not allowing them to go to our right."
The Terriers pulled even when Rachael Stillings (Escondido, CA) scored on a penalty corner with 14:46 left in the first half. Her shot was partially stopped by goalkeeper Brittany D'Agustine, but had enough momentum to carry into the back of the cage.
Rogers gave the Terriers the lead for good in the second half, tapping home a rebound of Stillings' shot off of a broken penalty corner. Senior forward Kate Cusick was able to control the ball as it bounced up, and made a nice pass to Stillings, whose shot was kicked out to Rogers, who in turn put the ball home.
"That is something we definitely practice," said Starr. "If you don't get a good corner, we practice what you're going to do next, and Kate had poise, she settled the ball and we ended up with a good corner off of a broken corner."
Freshman Whitney Peabody (Hamilton, MA) closed out the scoring, converting a nice ball from Robyn Kenney (Whitehouse Station, NJ) at the far side of the cage to make it 3-1. For Peabody, it was her second goal in as many games.
"Whitney's come right off the bench and scored the last two games," said Starr. "We've moved her around a bit this year, but I think she's really finding a home on the left side."
Harrington finished with six saves for the Terriers, who won their second-straight game. D'Augustine (Auburn, ME) had five saves for Dartmouth.
"This was a huge weekend for us," said Starr. "The team is showing a lot of maturity right now. We wanted to get our turf game back after being on the road."
B.U. closes out the regular season with four remaining home games, including its' final conference matchup of the year against Northeastern on October 21 at 1 p.m. The Terriers next face Rhode Island at home on Wednesday, October 18 at 7 p.m.
Game notes: Rogers' four-point game moves her into a tie for 14th place on the Terriers' all-time scoring list with Jessica Alcorta ('00) with 50 points. Rogers now has six assists on the season, tying her career-high set last season The Terriers have won at least 10 games under Sally Starr in 15 of 20 seasons.
