BOSTON, Mass. (November 18) - Sophomore guard Maria Smear (Annapolis, MD) scored a game-high 25 points, including 7-for-8 from three-point range, to lead Yale University (1-0) to an 81-60 win over Boston University (0-1) in the opening game of the Boston University Women's Basketball Invitational at the Case Center on Saturday. Junior forward Dia Dufault (Malone, NY) led the Terriers with 16 points and eight rebounds. It was the first-ever in-season basketball tournament held at Boston University, and was the season-opener for both schools.
Yale, which hit 7-of-10 three-pointers in the opening half, jumped out to a 14-2 lead to start the game, nine of those points coming on a trio of Smear three-pointers. B.U. was able to cut the lead down to 18-11 with 11:31 to go in the half on a pair of free-throws by freshman forward Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ), but that's as close as the Terriers could get. Yale shot 53.8 percent on 14-for-26 shooting in the first half. The Terriers struggled with their shooting, hitting only 17.9 percent on 5-for-28 shooting in the opening half, and 29 percent for the game. Yale shot 50 percent for the game. The Terriers were strong from the line, hitting 21-of-27 shots, a 78 percent clip.
Sophomore forward Helene Schutrumpf added 22 points and nine rebounds for the Bulldogs, who earned their first win over B.U. in eight tries. Senior center Alison Dixon (Norwood, MA) was the other Terrier in double figures with 10 points. Freshman Marisa Moseley (Springfield, MA) had nine in her collegiate debut.
Yale outrebounded B.U. 42-30, although the Terriers did grab 13 offensive boards to the Bulldogs' nine.
For the Terriers, it is only their seventh loss in 17 games opening at home. They are now 12-14 overall in season openers.
B.U. will face the University of Miami (Ohio) on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the consolation match. Yale will face Baylor University in the championship at 3 p.m. Baylor defeated Miami (Ohio) in the second game, 75-62.
