Terriers Flirt With Century Mark, Down Austin Peay 98-80
November 27, 2000 | Women's Basketball
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Freshman Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ) continued her impressive early season output, netting 30 points to lead the Terriers to their first win of the season, 98-80 over Austin Peay in the consolation game of the First Tennessee Tournament held at Vanderbilt University on Sunday. Vanderbilt won the tournament with a 79-61 win over Miami University (Ohio).
Senior center Alison Dixon (Norwood, MA) added 22 points and sophomore guard Alison Argentieri (Hornell, NY) had 20 for the Terriers, who have scored 90-plus points in a game twice this season. The last B.U. team to accomplish that feat was the 1986-87 squad, which finished 19-8. It is the most points the Terriers have scored in a game since December 13, 1980 in a 99-57 win over Central Connecticut.
The day did not start out so brightly for the Terriers, who again struggled to hit their shots in the early going, trailing the Lady Govs 25-12 with 8:27 left in the first half.
Argentieri, who played a strong game for the Terriers, pulled B.U. back into the game, draining a three with 6:23 left to cut the lead to 26-24. Moments later Terhune, who was 6-for-9 from beyond the arc, hit a three to give B.U. it's first lead of the game, 27-26. B.U. led at the break, 40-36.
In the second half the Terriers shooters began to heat up, hitting 54 percent of their shots as opposed to just 33 percent in the first half. Terhune hit a three to put the Terriers up 10, 66-56 with 10:15 to go. B.U. then went on a 20-4 run paced by Terhune's nine points and Dixon's seven.
The Terriers free-throw shooting sealed the game, hitting 15-of-16 in the second half, 24-of-26 for the game, 92 percent.
The Lady Govs, who were led by Brooke Armstead's 27 points, shot only 40 percent for the game, 29 percent in the opening half. B.U. did an excellent job holding onto the ball, committing only 10 turnovers in the game, two in the second half. They scored 23 points off of Austin Peay turnovers.
Freshman Courtney Jones (Lafayette Hill, PA) turned in a nice performance as well, scoring four points and dishing out seven assists, all in the second half.
Terhune was the sole B.U. player named to the All-Tournament Team, her second consecutive honor. She was also named to the All-Tournament Team of the B.U. Women's Basketball Invitational in the week prior.
The Terriers are off until Friday, December 1 when they face Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the opening game of the SMU Hoops For the Cure Women's Basketball Classic at 5 p.m. in Dallas, TX.
