Terriers Find Big Easy a Little Tough
December 21, 2000 | Women's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The women's basketball team was a little rusty after an 11-day layoff, falling to No. 22 Tulane, 110-66, at Fogelman Arena on Thursday (Dec. 22).
Tulane featured a balanced attack that saw three players post double-doubles, and six players score in double figures, led by Gwen Slaughter and Janell Burse, who had 20 points and 10 rebounds apiece. Alison Argentieri (Hornell, NY) led the Terriers with 17 points.
B.U. was without the services of senior forward Alison Dixon (Norwood, MA) and freshman Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ) for reasons not immediately known following the contest.
The Terriers held a 22-19 lead with 6:55 left in the opening half, before Tulane reeled off seven straight points to take a 26-22 lead. B.U. got within two, but Sarah Goree scored 12 of her 17 points as Tulane took a 43-26 lead into the half.
The Green Wave led by as many as 50 points in the second half. B.U was outmatched on the boards, as Tulane used its height advantage to claim a 56-22 edge in rebounding. The Terriers had three players foul out, including Anne Nelson (Blue Bell, PA) who recorded a season-high 11 points.
B.U. shot 40 percent for the game on 23-of-57 shooting. The Terriers were 16-of-21 from the line.
Tulane, the third NCAA Tournament team from 1999-2000 the Terriers have played this season, shot 52 percent from the field for the game on 34-for-65 shooting. The team also hit 31-of-43 free throws, 72 percent.
The 110 points allowed by the Terriers are the second-most in program history. B.U. gave up 116 points in a 116-81 loss at Providence on November 28, 1990.
The Terriers will look to regroup at home on Friday, December 29 with a 1 p.m. afternoon tilt against Wagner.
