Hofstra quickly made up the deficit and took the lead, 42-40, on a layup by Joy Pela (14 points) with 14:34 to go in the game... The Pride built a five-point lead with 9:48 to go before the Terriers went on an 11-3 run to take a 58-55 lead with 5:20 to go on a layup by Annie Tomasini (Boston, MA). They're Not saying Katie Ter-who? Anymore Freshman forward Katie Terhune has certainly made an impression on the Terriers and, more importantly, opponents just nine games into her collegiate career... The Port Murray, NJ native leads the America East Conference in scoring, averaging 19.8 ppg, and is second on the team in rebounding with 5.9 rpg...Terhune has been named the America East Rookie of the Year the first three weeks of the season, and has been named to each all-tournament team the Terriers have participated in this season... Most recently, she was named to the SMU Hoops for the Cure All-Tournament team... She has also been named to both the B.U. and Vanderbilt University all-tournament teams... She set a school record for free throws made in a game (17) and tied the mark for free-throws attempted (18)... In her first collegiate start against Austin Peay, her smooth shooting came to the fore as she scored 30 points, a week after netting 27 in a 102-97 overtime loss to Miami University... She scored a team-high 14 against #25-ranked Vanderbilt the day before... She has missed only six free throws in 71 attempts, a 91.5 percentage.
Verde Out Junior guard Pilar Verde, arguably the best shooter on the team, suffered a season-ending broken ankle in practice on December 7, a day before the Terriers game against Drexel... It was unrelated to the ankle injury she suffered earlier in the season.
Broken Records Despite losing to Miami (OH), 102-97 in the consolation of the B.U. Women's Basketball Invitational on Nov. 19, the Terriers did set some team and individual records in the game. Freshman Katie Terhune hit on 17-of-18 shots from the line, setting a new mark for free throws made in a game, while tying the mark of free throws attemped... Terhune broke the old mark of 13, set by Jill Sosnak ('95) versus Hartford on February 2, 1991. The 18 free throws attempted ties the record set by Debbie Miller ('81) versus Syracuse on January 4, 1980. In addition, the 37 free throws made by the Terriers breaks the previous team mark of 33 set against Central Connecticut on December 13, 1980.
It Pays To Go to the Free Throw Line The Terriers are certainly using the free throw line to their advantage this season... After nine games, the team is shooting 75.6 percent (189-for-250) from the charity stripe, tops in the America East... Freshman Katie Terhune leads the way, converting an impressive 65-of-71 attempts for an equally imressive 91.5 percent.
90's in 2000 The Terriers have scored 90 points in a game twice already this season... The last time a Terrier team accomplished that feat was during the 1986-87 season... The 98 points B.U. scored against Austin Peay was the most since a 99-57 win over Central Connecticut on December 13, 1980.
Rookie of the Week Part III Katie Terhune has earned Rookie of the Week honors from the America East the first three weeks... Terhune averaged 15.5 ppg and 4.5 rpg from November 13-19... She averaged 22.0 ppg and 4.5 rpg from November 20-26... The week of December 3, she averaged 23.0 ppg and 10.0 rpg, scoring the first two double-doubles of her collegiate career.
Season Twenty Six The Boston University women's basketball team is in its 26th season of varsity competition... The Terriers completed the 1999-2000 season with an 8-21 record, 3-15 in America East-play... Since 1975-76, B.U. has accumulated an overall record of 316-336 (.485).
Head Coach Margaret McKeon Margaret McKeon, a highly-successful collegiate player and assistant coach, is in her second season as the head women's basketball coach at Boston University... McKeon tasted success in her first collegiate game on November 20, 1999, as the Terriers defeated Colgate, 78-58 on "The Roof." Three days later, McKeon registered win number two, a 75-67 triumph at Harvard. It was the first time B.U. had begun the season 2-0 since the 1994-95 season...The Terriers finished McKeon's inaugural campaign with an 8-21 record...The team responded in the America East Tournament, scoring a season-high 84 points in an 84-69 win over Towson in the first round before falling to America East Championship runner-up Maine in the quarterfinals... In her first year, McKeon established an up-tempo presence among the Terriers, enacting a rapid pace to the team's practices as well as its games.
Worthy Additions The Terriers have two new assistants working alongside head coach Margaret McKeon and assistant Gabrielle Butler... Patrina Blow, who served as an assistant at Hofstra University for the past three seasons, was hired on May 22... Blow is a former four-year letterwinner for St. John's from 1990-94... Michael Eineker, who spent the past two seasons as head coach at Bloomfield College (NJ), was hired on Sept. 7.
Terriers in Tourney Action The Terriers fell to SMU in the championship game of the SMU Hoops for the Cure Tournament on December 1-2 in Dallas, TX... The Terriers defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff on the first day of the tournament, 87-63... Boston University split a pair of games at the First Tennessee Tournament hosted by Vanderbilt University on November 25-26... The Terriers fell to the host Commodores, 92-56 on the opening day, but rebounded to down Austin Peay, 98-80, in the consolation game... B.U. kicked off the 2000-01 season as host of the first-ever in-season basketball tournament at the school on November 18-19, with Miami (OH), Yale and Baylor... B.U. lost to Yale, 81-60, in the opening game, and fell to Miami in the consolation game, 102-97, in overtime... Baylor won the B.U. Women's Basketball Invitational with an 81-52 win over Yale in the championship... The Terriers are 2-4 in tournament games this season.
For Dixon, It's As Easy As 1-2-3 Senior forward/center Alison Dixon moved into third place on the Terrier all-time scoring list with her first basket against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on December 1... Dixon currently has 1,401 points in her Terrier career... She passed Andrea Ashuck (89) to move into third place all-time, and is just 29 points shy of Jill Sosnak (95), for second place... Debbie Miller 81 is the all-time leading scorer in B.U. history with 1,869 points... Dixon completed her junior year as the fifth-leading scorer in Terrier history with 1,296 points, 573 shy of Miller's school mark... A Second-Team America East All-Conference selection in 1999-00, Dixon has averaged 15.6 points per game in her three-plus seasons at B.U., including 16.4 last season, good for fifth in the conference. This season she is averaging 12.1 ppg. In 1999-00, she set personal highs in most major categories, including field goals made (198), field goal percentage (52.8%), rebounding (7.0 rebounds per game), steals (42), minutes per game (35.3) and points.
Getting Her Points Across Then junior forward Alison Dixon became the second fastest player in school history to reach 1,000 career points in a losing effort as the Terriers bowed to Drexel, 60-59, on January 2, 2000... Dixon finished with 19 points, bringing her career total to 1,010 in 65 games after that game... Debbie Miiller, the Terriers all-time leading scorer, was the fastest to reach the 1,000-point plateau, doing it in 54 games.
Offense, Defense Improved Under McKeon in 1999-00, the team improved its shooting from the prior year, connecting on 41.1 percent of shots from the field, as opposed to 39.4 in 1998-99. The Terriers became more of a three-point threat with the additions of Alison Argentieri and Pilar Verde, hitting 98-of-334 attempts, 29.3 percent from long range. That number was over four percentage points from the previous year...Defensively, the Terriers were much improved. Opponents shot only 40.7 percent from the field last season, as opposed to 45.7 percent in 1998-99. The rebound disparity was much closer as well. In 1998-99, B.U. averaged 33.1 rpg while opponents pulled down 42.8 rpg. Last season however, B.U. averaged 35.9 rebounds per game as opposed to 37.1 for opponents.
Dia Delivers Junior forward Dia Dufault continues to prove she is one of the team's most versatile players... Dufault is averaging 10.7 ppg, good for second on the team... She also leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 6.8 boards a game, including 24 offensive rebounds in nine games... She is also averaging 2.0 steals per game and 1.9 assists per game... Last season, Dufault finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.9 points per game, tying a career-high with 25 points in the season-opening win over Colgate. Dufault led the team with 59 steals, and was second in rebounding (6.6 per game) and assists (2.6 per game), while starting 28-of-29 games. She was a consistent three-point threat, hitting 20-of-84 threes and only Alison Dixon went to the line more than Dufault's 104 trips.
Terriers on the Defensive Boston University played a more up-tempo style at both ends of the court in Margaret McKeon's first year as head coach, as evidenced by the Terriers' fourth-place standing in the conference in field goal percentage defense... Opponents shot just 40.7 percent against B.U. last season, including a 68-55 win over SUNY Albany on March 8th, when the Great Danes shot just 29.7 percent (19-of-64) for the game.
