Terriers Battle, Fall to Mustangs in SMU Tournament Championship
December 3, 2000 | Women's Basketball
DALLAS, Texas - The Boston University women's basketball team played one of its best games of the season, battling host SMU the entire game before falling, 63-56, in the championship game of the SMU Hoops For the Cure Basketball Invitational on Saturday (Dec. 2). The Terriers held SMU, an NCAA Tournament selection last season, to just 28.8 percent shooting for the game.
Freshman Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ) led the Terriers with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Dia Dufault (Malone, NY) had a strong second half for B.U., adding 15 points and 10 rebounds for the game.
Strong defense by both teams led to some low shooting percentages by both teams in the first half. SMU shot 20.5 percent (8-for-39) in the opening half, while the Terriers shot 22.2 percent (6-for-27). The Mustangs led 25-16 at the break, thanks in large part to a 15-3 offensive rebound advantage. Katie Remke had 14 of her 20 rebounds in the first half, seven offensive, to lead the Mustangs, who had 10 second chance points in the half to the Terriers' two.
In the second half, SMU was able to build a 10 point lead on four occasions, but the Terriers held tough playing tight defense throughout the contest. Freshman Courtney Jones (Lafayette Hill, PA) was a particular standout on 'D' for B.U.
B.U. cut the lead to 50-46 with 5:22 left in the game when Marisa Moseley hit a pair of free throws, but the Mustangs quickly went back up seven on a layup by D-dra Rucker with 3:14 left. Dufault, who scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half, drained a three, the only one of the game for the Terriers, to cut the lead to 54-50 with 3:03 to go, but the Terriers could get no closer.
Rucker hit a pair of free throws late in the game to put the game out of reach.
For her efforts, Terhune was named to the all-tournament team. It is the third all-tournament team selection for the Terrier freshman, who is averaging 20.2 points per game in six games this season.
B.U. falls to 2-4 on the season, SMU is now 4-2. The Terriers return home to open their America East Conference schedule on Tuesday, December 5 against Maine.
