December 5, 2000 | Women's Basketball
BOSTON, Mass. - Freshman forward Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ) showed why she has been named the America East Rookie of the Week the past three weeks, scoring a game-high 22 points on 10-for-18 shooting to lead the Boston University women's basketball team to an 86-64 win over the University of Maine in the America East opener for both schools.
Terhune added five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals for the Terriers, who improve to 3-4 on the season, 1-0 in the America East. Freshman Heather Ernest (Farmington, ME) came off the bench to lead the Black Bears (2-4, 0-1) with 16 points.
The Terriers jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead just five minutes into the game on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Alison Argentieri (Hornell, NY). B.U. pressed Maine the entire contest, forcing 27 turnovers while committing only 16.
B.U. led 42-28 at the half on the heels of their best shooting performance of the season, hitting 16-of-29 field goals (55.2 percent).
Maine scored four quick points to open the second half on a layup by Ernest and a pair of free throws by Ellen Geraghty (14 points) to pull within 10, but that's as close as it got. Terhune scored 14 of her 22 points in the second half.
Senior center Alison Dixon (Norwood, MA) scored 16 points and junior guard Pilar Verde hit 4-of-6 three pointers to finish with 14 points for the Terriers. Christy Grover (Bucksport, ME) was the other Black Bear in double figures with 12 points.
For the game, B.U. shot 52 percent (34-for-66) and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the line in the second half. Maine shot 37 percent for the game on 22-for-59 shooting. The Black Bears outrebounded B.U., 43-31.
