December 8, 2000 | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA -- The Boston University women's basketball team saw its bid to go 2-0 in the America East foiled in the City of Brotherly Love, as the Terriers fell to Drexel, 88-69 on Friday.
Freshman forward Katrina Martin scored her fourth double-double of the season, 23 points and 13 rebounds, to lead four Dragons in double figures.
Freshman Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ) continued to pace the Terriers, scoring a team-high 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Senior forward Alison Dixon (Norwood, MA) added 16 points and nine rebounds for B.U., which fell to 3-5, 1-1 on the season.
B.U. only led twice, early in the game, 2-0 and 7-5. Drexel, which shot 42 percent in the first half, built a 12-point lead on a layup by Heather McGinty, who had 12 points, with 3:10 to go in the first half. The Terriers were able to close the gap to 42-36 with 1:11 to go on a drive by Lashaunda Mitchell, but a three-pointer by Steph Frysinger at the end of the half, gave Drexel a 45-36 lead at the break. B.U. shot 43 percent in the opening half, but was only 1-for-5 from downtown. The Terriers were 2-for-11 from three-point range for the game.
A 17-4 run by Drexel early in the second half, keyed by seven points from Frysinger, effectively put the game away for the Dragons, who are now 4-2, 2-0 in the conference.
Rebounding continued to plague the Terriers, who were outrebounded by the Dragons, 52-33 for the game.
Freshman Courtney Jones (Lafayette Hill, PA) came off the bench to add nine points, seven assists and five steals for B.U., which suffered an even more devastating loss than the one to Drexel. Junior Pilar Verde (Madrid, Spain) will be out of the lineup indefinitely after suffering a broken ankle in practice on Thursday. She is scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday.
B.U. will next face Hofstra University on Sunday, December 10 at 4 p.m.
