Holman's Two Goals Lead Terriers Past Delaware, 3-2
September 24, 2000 | Field Hockey
BOSTON, MA - Junior midfielder Casey Holman (Bridgeton, NJ) scored her second goal of the game midway through the second half to give the Boston University field hockey team a 3-1 lead in its 3-2 America East Conference victory over Delaware at Nickerson Field on Sept. 24. The Terriers are now 6-2, 3-0 in America East. Delaware falls to 3-6, 1-1. It is the Terriers' 13th-straight win over a conference opponent.
Delaware got on the board first just 1:08 into the game when Kate Johnson redirected a Stephanie Dorsch centering pass over goalkeeper Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, NH) to give the Fightin' Blue Hens an early 1-0 lead.
Senior midfielder Robyn Kenney (Whitehouse Station, NJ) answered for B.U. seven minutes later, putting home the rebound of Felicia Cappabianca's (North Caldwell, NJ) penalty corner shot.
The Terriers controlled play for much of the first half, and took the lead on Holman's first goal of the game with 5:09 to play in the half.
B.U. came out in the second half putting more pressure on Delaware goalkeeper Andrea Grasso, who had nine saves. Holman scored her second tally of the game with 19:40 to go in the contest, slipping a rebound of a Kenney shot under the outstretched leg of Grasso for a 3-1 lead.
"We came out pressing real well in the second half," head coach Sally Starr said. "We just didn't finish them."
Erin Shaklee's goal with 11:44 to go in the game cut B.U.'s lead to 3-2, but the Terrier defense held, backed by Harrington, who had four of her seven saves in the second half.
Delaware had its best chance to tie the score in the closing seconds. A ball from 30 yards out caromed off the B.U. goalpost out to freshman Jessica Breault, but with Harrington cutting down the angle, Breault's shot went wide, ending the game.
Junior midfielder Kerry Carney(Yorktown Heights, NY), who didn't figure into the scoring, had a strong game controlling both sides of the ball and was instrumental in the Terrier victory.
"Kerry was a general out there," said Starr.
The Terriers now travel to Vermont to take on the Catamounts on Sept. 27 at 3:30 p.m.
Game Notes: Kenney's goal was her fourth of the season, a career-high The Terriers have sent 96 shots at the opponent's cage in the last three games, an average of 32 a game The last time B.U. lost to a conference opponent was November 6, 1998, a 3-2 decision to New Hampshire in the America East Tournament It was the first multiple-goal game of Holman's career The win marks head coach Sally Starr's 230th victory at Boston University.
