UMass-Amherst Defeats Terriers, 2-1, With OT Penalty Stroke
October 3, 2001 | Field Hockey
Waltham, MA - Senior Anke Bruemmer connected on a penalty stroke 48 seconds into overtime to lift Massachusetts-Amherst to a 2-1 field hockey victory over intrastate rival Boston University Wednesday night (Oct. 3) at Bentley College's Dana Center.
UMass-Amherst got on the board first, as junior Erika Whiston scored off a pass from sophomore Beth Percival to give the visiting team a 1-0 advantage at 29:47 of the first period.
The two teams would battle back and forth for the remainder of the first half, with UMass-Amherst leading in shots, 9-3, and B. U. leading in penalty corners, 5-3.
The Terriers controlled the action for much of the second half. B. U. head coach Sally Starr, as she had done in the previous two games - both come-from-behind overtime wins - called a second-half time out with 10:10 left in regulation. The result was an increased offensive presence, and a goal with 2:08 left. Freshman Lauren Vendetti (Ashland, MA) sent a pass to senior Felicia Cappabianca (North Caldwell, NJ) that the midfielder shot past Minutewoman goalkeeper Ashley Egland to even the score at 1-1 and send the game into overtime.
Less than one minute into the extra session, UMass-Amherst freshman Ashley Gilbert was fouled on a scoring opportunity to the left of Terrier junior goalkeeper Susan Harrington. Bruemmer was awarded the resulting penalty stroke and converted it to give the Minutewomen the victory.
"We can't put ourselves in situations in which we're constantly trying to come back late in the game to tie it," said Starr. "I think we did a great job of it at Delaware and Towson, but tonight is a game we lost in the first 15 minutes. We need to come out and assert ourselves, and we really allowed UMass-Amherst to gain confidence in the first half, and I don't think we played with the same urgency that we played with in the second half."
For the game, UMass-Amherst (3-5, 0-0) outshot B. U. 15-9, but the Terriers led in penalty corner opportunities, 12-6. Harrington made 10 saves for the Terriers, while Egland stopped four B. U. shots.
Boston University (4-5, 4-1) returns to conference action on Sat., Oct. 6 at Maine. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
