Terriers' Lopez Ranked Among Top 30 Newcomers in the Nation
August 15, 2001 | Women's Basketball
BOSTON - The Boston University women's basketball program received further acknowledgment of its excellent incoming class, as sophomore Amparo Lopez, a 6-5 center from Madrid, Spain, was ranked near the top in a poll by womenscollegehoops.com that ranks the newcomers who will make an impact on their teams. Lopez was chosen among the top 30 for the 2001-02 college women's basketball season, recognizing her potential to make an immediate impact for the Terriers this season.
Last season Lopez played at Nassau Community College, where she averaged 10.5 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 4.0 blocked shots per game, leading the team to a 16-4 record and its first-ever trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 15 title game. She was named to the NJCAA Region 15 All-Tournament Team, and garnered Second Team NJCAA Region 15 All-Region honors as well.
While in high school Lopez was a member of the national team of Spain since 1994.
The Terrier's incoming class was ranked 24th nationally in January by the All-Star Girls Recruiting Report. B. U. is the only America East program to be ranked in the top 25.
Lopez joins Adrienne Norris, a 6-1 forward from Delafield, Wis., and Larissa Parr, a 6-0 forward from Eau Claire, Wis., in the Terrier's incoming class of 2005.
Boston University returns 11 regulars from the 2000-2001 team that finished eighth in the America East Conference with a 10-19 overall record. Lopez's height, along with her excellent hands, will instantly improve the Terriers' inside presence and its rebounding this season.
