Field Hockey Chosen 2nd in America East in Preseason Poll
August 22, 2001 | Field Hockey
BOSTON - The two-time defending conference champion Boston University field hockey team was chosen second in the 2001 America East preseason poll, voted on by the league's coaches. The Terriers received three of a possible 11 first-place votes and 71 overall points, four shy of preseason favorite New Hampshire, which had 75 overall points.
The Terriers, 6-2 in America East and 16-8 overall, defeated New Hampshire, 2-1, in the America East Championship game a season ago. The team returns junior Jane Rogers (8 goals, 12 assists) up front and senior back Felicia Cappabianca, both of whom received All-Conference honors last fall. Senior Susan Harrington, the Second Team All-Conference goalkeeper, also returns after posting a 16-8 mark with a 1.52 goals against average.
Four different teams received first-place votes in balloting by the head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their teams. New Hampshire received four of a possible 11 first-place votes. Northeastern (2 first-place votes, 67 points) and Delaware (1, 59) were others to receive first-place votes.
The Terriers open their season with road games at William and Mary, which finished 12th in last year's national poll, on Friday, Sept. 7, and defending national champion and top-ranked Old Dominion on Sunday, Sept. 9.
