Cambridge, MA - The Boston University field hockey team opened its conference slate with a 2-0 win over Vermont at Harvard's Jordan Field on Wednesday (Sept. 19). For the first time this season the Terriers offense hit its stride, collecting 24 shots, resulting in goals by junior Jane Rogers(Watertown, MA) and sophomore Whitney Peabody (Hamilton, MA).
B. U.'s renewed emphasis at the offensive end was evident from the start, as the Terriers had numerous scoring chances. Rogers finally scored at 7:08 of the first half, winning a battle in front of the Vermont net, to put the Terriers ahead, 1-0. In the half B. U. had 13 shots and 11 penalty corner opportunities, compared to four shots and two penalty corners - their only two of the game - for the Catamounts.
Peabody collected five first-half shots, but it wasn't until five minutes into the second half that she scored from the right side, giving the Terriers an insurance goal at 30:10. Sophomore Dalinda Banuelos (Escondido, CA) assisted on the goal.
"Tonight we fought for every ball in every situation with every bit of intensity and enthusiasm we had," remarked head coach Sally Starr. "I'm really pleased with the win, but I'm even more pleased with how we won. We defended as a team, we attacked as a team and we played some quality hockey tonight."
Starr made a number of adjustments to the lineup to jumpstart the offense, a decision which paid off.
"Felicia Cappabianca played a new spot tonight, freshman Meredith Longplayed in a forward line after playing mostly defender for us this season, she played well. Casey Holman came up huge, she was all over the field for us," Starr said.
Junior Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, NH) was again solid in net for the Terriers, making four saves in recording her first shutout of the season and seventh of her career. The Terriers defense was strong again, as they allowed only one second-half shot.
Vermont (1-5, 0-1) received strong goaltending from junior Holly Colberg, who made 13 saves and was credited with keeping the game close into the second half.
The win ends a three-game losing streak for B. U. to start the season. It was 10 years ago that the Terriers last started 0-3. In that season they finished first in the conference and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, winning a first-round game over Harvard.
Boston University (1-3, 1-0) returns to action, facing cross-town rival Northeastern on Saturday. Game time at NU's Sweeney Field is 7:00 p.m.
